GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (4-3-2, 3-2-0 RMAC) claimed a pivotal three points with a 2-0 road-win over Colorado Mesa University (3-5-1, 1-4-0 RMAC) on Friday night.
How It Happened: The two teams combined for 18 total shots in the first half alone. Regis put four on frame while the Mavericks landed three on target. Both goalies stood tall tallying three saves apiece, but it was sophomore Carly Bych finding the back of the net in the 42nd minute, putting the Rangers on the scoreboard first.
Bych took a rip from approximately 30 yards out and beat the keeper, scoring her first-career goal in an RU uniform,
The long-range goal provided momentum for Regis that carried over into the second half. The Rangers took advantage of their first offense opportunity of the second period, widening the gap to 2-0 in the 51st minute of play.
Senior Cat Devitt lifted a ball over the top of the defenders' head, placing it in stride of junior Tori Rinsem who slotted the ball past the keeper. The goal was the first of the season for Rinsem.
The Mavericks outshot RU 12-8 in the second half, but sophomore Julia Coombs came-up with five saves to protect her fifth shutout of the season, tying for the most shutouts by any keeper in the RMAC.
Game Notes: Regis trailed 19-18 in the shots category and placed just six shots on frame compared to the Mavericks eight. Coombs recorded a career-high eight saves.
Bych scored her first career goal as Rinsem tallied for first of the season. Bych placed 2-of-3 shots on frame and Rinsem buried the only shot of four that she placed on frame.
The Rangers held the corner kick advantage 4-1.
