GUNNISON, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (5-3-2, 4-2-0 RMAC) defeated Western State Colorado University (2-9, 2-4 RMAC) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Tori Rinsem was credited with both goals of the game.
How It Happened: In the 19th minute, junior Emily Ramos recorded her sixth assist of the season. She sent a cross into the six-yard box where junior Tori Rinsem used her head to redirect the ball into the goal, giving Regis a 1-0 lead.
The Rangers garnered five total shot attempts, including Rinsem's goal, in the first 19 minutes of play but were unable to create another scoring opportunity throughout the rest of the first half. Four of their five chances landed on frame forcing the Mountaineers keeper to three saves.
Western State totaled just three shots in the first 45 minutes. Their only shot that was a true treat was saved in the sixth minute by sophomore Julia Coombs.
RU spent the opening minutes of the second half in their own defensive third as the Mountaineers came out of the break with a strong attack, adding four to their shot total in just 10 minutes. Coombs saved one of the four shots and watched the other three miss wide and high.
Rinsem got-off the first shot-attempt of the half for Regis in the 68th minute but it was saved by the Western State goalie. Just one minute later, sophomore Keegan Storlie drew a foul inside the Rangers' attacking penalty box, earning a PK. Rinsem was called to the spot and finished her third goal of the weekend with confidence, stretching the lead to 2-0.
The Rangers kept Western State off the scoreboard to post their sixth shutout of the season.
Game Notes: Rinsem scored the only two goals of the match, totaling three over the weekend. She took three total shots as sophomore Carly Bych took a game-high four shots.
Ramos assisted her sixth goal of the season, tying the RMAC record.
Coombs saved all four shots on goal and now leads the RMAC with six shutouts.
