No. 24 Regis rolls past Western State, Kennedy sets new season-high

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 24 ranked Regis University volleyball team (11-7, 7-2 RMAC) rebounded after a tough loss on Friday, coming out on Saturday afternoon and sweeping the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers 25-21, 25-9 and 25-12 for their seventh Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) win of the season.

How it Happened: Regis and Western State opened the game up with what would turn out to be the most competitive set of the match in the first set. With an 11-10 lead, the Rangers finally opened the set up and jumped out to an 18-14 lead off a kill from junior Nikki Kennedy. They would go on to win the set 25-21.

The second set was a strong showing from RU as they put on a dominating performance offensively and defensively. The offense combined for a .429 attack percentage in set two, leading to a 25-9 win for Regis. The 16-point win is the largest margin of victory for the Rangers this season.

Set three was another great performance for an RU squad looking for a three-set sweep over the Mountaineers. Regis had their best set of the match as far as attacking went, earning 14 kills in 27 attempts, and committing only two attack errors for a .444 attack percentage.

Game Notes: Kennedy was the kill leader for the game totaling 13 kills without a single attacking error. The middle also added four blocks defensively, but her .722 attack percentage set a new season-high for a single game. Sophomore Caitlyn Burroway put down double-digit kills (10) through three sets, and junior Izzy Gosar added eight with a .467 attack percentage. Junior setter Silvia Basso recorded 33 assists, senior libero Kristina Schell had 14 digs, each of which led the team in respective categories. Basso had three blocks, while Gosar and freshman Kate Kleinschmidt each tallied two. The team combined to hit .326 for the match, registering 40 kills, 42 digs, six service aces and seven blocks.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 24 ranked volleyball team will return home for two matches next weekend as Fort Lewis College and Adams State University make their way to Denver. First serve will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 5 against the Skyhawks, followed by a 5 p.m. showdown with the Grizzlies on Saturday night.
