DENVER, Colo. – Senior
Jarrett Brodbeck scored 20 points in the final 10 minutes to fuel the Regis University men' basketball team (13-6, 0-3 RMAC) to a 76-69 comeback victory over Adams State University (6-12, 6-7 RMAC) on Saturday night.
How It Happened: The Rangers held a three-point lead on two separate occasions with the latter being a 7-4 advantage with 15:26 left in the first half. RU was unable to find the basket over the next 5:30 as they watched Adams State march to a 9-0 run and a 13-7 advantage. Senior
Ryan Beisty found netting, stopping the Grizzlies' run and pulling Regis back within four, 13-9.
Adams State managed to double the Rangers score, 24-12, with 6:09 left to play in the first. RU was able to scrape away at the Grizzlies lead before halftime as Beisty and senior
Avonte Nelms added five points apiece. Regis trailed 34-26 at halftime.
Brodbeck, who scored 28 second half points, accounted for the first points of the second half as he downed a jumper assisted by junior
Roberto Vercellino. The
Rangers played sound defense to open the second half, allowing the Grizzlies just one basket in the first five minutes.
Another Brodbeck jumper followed by a
Brian Dawson layup brought RU within three 36-33, at the 15:05 mark. Over the next three minutes, Regis went 0-for-5 from the field with one turnover, permitting Adams State to a 10-0 run and a 13-point lead.
Beisty once again had the answer for the Rangers offense, draining a three-pointer off a Vercellino pass, halting the Grizzlies run.
Freshman
Toni Rocak made two free-throws with 8:28 remaining in the game to jump start the second half push for RU. A Dawson floater brought Regis back within five, 55-50, for the first time in eight minutes.
Brodbeck and Nelms each went two-for-two from the foul line to give the Rangers a 60-59 lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Brodbeck and junior
Christian Little stretched the RU advantage to six, 66-60.
Another Brodbeck three-pointer provided Regis with a seven-point cushion, 72-65, with two minutes to play. The Rangers went four-for-four from the charity stripe to close the game 76-69.
Game Notes: Brodbeck scored a season-high 34 points, going 4-for-10 from long range, 10-for-18 from the field and 10-for-12 from the foul line. Beisty scored 15 points as he was the only other RU player to score double digits. As a team, Regis shot 38.3 percent from the field compared to the Grizzlies' 36.6 percent.
The Rangers were led by Beisty and Vercellino on the glass as they both contributed a team-high eight boards. RU outrebounded Adams State 45-42.
