DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team split the weekend after falling 85-75 to Colorado State University-Pueblo this evening at the Regis Fieldhouse.
How it Happened: Both teams took turns trading baskets in the opening minutes, neither taking a governing edge. At the 5:29 minute-mark,
Whitney Jacob squared up from behind the arc before
Shelby Espinosa chipped in a lay-up to put RU up 14-10. From there, Regis began to struggle to find the bottom of the net, allowing the ThunderWolves to string together a 12-0 run in the remaining four minutes.
Trailing 25-14 going into the second quarter, Regis shot only 22.2% from the floor, going 4-for-18. Nelson came up big for the Rangers, scoring seven of her 17 points to keep the gap to just seven points.
Following the break,
Majestie Robinson and Jacob earned a pair of buckets to pull them within five, but it would give way to a 9-2 CSU-Pueblo scoring stretch. At the 2:12 minute-mark, the Rangers trailed by 10 after an
Emma Sterkel layup.
The ThunderWolves' lead did not dip below nine points in the final quarter and eventually swelled to the largest difference of the game at 14 with just over seven minutes to play. Jacob and Robinson fired off a pair of treys while Espinosa contributed a layup, but Regis would ultimately fall 85-75.
Game Notes: Robinson paced RU with 18 points, registering a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. She also added two rebounds, two assists and one steal. Nelson complimented her 17 points with six rebounds and one steal while
Whitney Jacob finished with 10 points, two assists and six rebounds. Pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds was
Shelby Espinosa.
Regis shot 29% from the field, going 20-for-68 and 25% from three. They out-rebounded CSU-Pueblo 41-32 but suffered a hampering 19 turnovers.
