Regis Outlasts Hardrockers on the Road

RAPID CITY, S.D. -  The Regis University women's basketball team turned in a 62-49 performance this evening against South Dakota School of Mines, improving their record to a spotless 7-0 against the Hardrockers.

How it Happened: Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first quarter as Regis compiled 31.3 percent on 5-of-16 shooting and the Hardrockers finished just 3-for-12 . Whitney Jacob tallied a team-best four points in the opening quarter to give Regis a slight 11-10 edge going into the second.

RU and the Hardrockers traded baskets in the second period, neither team allowing the other to earn a comfortable advantage. Finally, at the 2:04 minute-mark, RU took their largest lead of the quarter on an Alex Nelson layup that put them up 25-21. But with 17 seconds left, SDSM answered back to close the gap 25-23 heading into halftime.

Following a Nelson basket, Regis was able to finally create space between themselves and the host, going on a 7-1 run behind buckets from Jaz'Myne Snipes and Emma Sterkel. With under three minutes to play, Sterkel knocked down her second three-pointer of the night to help the Rangers to a 37-32 advantage going into the final quarter.

Morgan Ducklow opened the fourth period with a driving layup before Walters cashed in a pair of treys to put the Rangers up by a margin of 11 points with 6:30 remaining. With under three minutes to play, Shelby Espinosa found Sterkel on the wing to register her third three of the night, and as time wound down, Regis earned another pair of baskets from Nelson and Snipes. RU would go on to cap the game 62-49.

Game Notes: Sterkel finished the contest with a game-high 17 points in addition to her three steals and one rebound. Walters followed with nine points, two steals and two assists while Nelson chipped in eight points and four rebounds. Both Jacob and Espinosa pulled down nine rebounds and six points.

Regis shot 40.4% from the floor but just 25% from behind the arc, going 5-for-20. As a team, the Rangers out-rebounded the Hardrockers 39-30 while also surpassing them in steals 8-4.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis continues the weekend with a 4:00 PM contest against Black Hills State University tomorrow afternoon in Spearfish, South Dakota.
