SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Regis University women's basketball team celebrated a sweep this weekend as they easily routed Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Black Hills State University 74-59 in Spearfish, South Dakota.
How it Happened: The Rangers opened the scoring on a pair of
Alex Nelson free throws before
Elly Walters strung together a jumper to 3-pointer combo that put Regis ahead 7-5. With just over 3:30 to play in the first, Walters knocked down a second triple then proceeded to find
Whitney Jacob behind the arc to cash in her first three of the contest.
Trailing 16-15 going into the second period, Regis gave up a 9-1 run to the Yellow Jackets in the first five minutes.
Emma Sterkel stepped up to stop the bleeding with a bucket from three-point range while
Jaz'Myne Snipes completed a three-point play after being fouled under the basket. Sterkel and Walters continued to put on a shooting clinic, rising above the defense to drain a pair of threes that handed Regis a 28-25 advantage. Black Hills was able to notch a pair of baskets, but using a Snipes bunny, RU went into halftime leading 30-29.
Sterkel opened the third quarter dialing up a pair of treys before dishing out an assist to
Shelby Espinosa, creating a 38-33 edge for Regis.
Morgan Ducklow followed suite, getting in on the 3-point action as she nailed two triples herself with just over two minutes remaining. Nelson went on to cap the quarter singlehandedly scoring seven points to bolster the Ranger lead to 56-42.
Behind another set of Walters triples, RU extended their advantage to 63-46. At the 2:40 minute-mark, Ducklow hammered in the 14th three-pointer of the contest as well as the final nail in the coffin as they would go on to win 74-59.
