Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Regis Narrowly Edged 69-64 by Griffins

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team fell in heartbreak fashion this afternoon, dropping a home contest with Westminster College 69-64 in the Regis Fieldhouse.

How it Happened: The Rangers were slow to come alive in the opening minutes of the first quarter, falling behind 7-0 before finally notching their first point in the fifth minute on a Jaz'Myne Snipes free throw. Behind buckets from Majestie Robinson and Emma Sterkel, RU inched their way closer to cutting the gap and trailed 17-12 going into the second.

By the 8:32 mark, Westminster had taken a daunting 23-12 lead. On their home turf, the Rangers did not give up on the fight, however, and worked to catalogue a 16-4 run. Alex Nelson cashed in a three-pointer before Morgan Ducklow and Whitney Jacob both added triples of their own. With three and half remaining in the quarter, Ducklow sunk a second three and the score would fall knotted 29-29 at the half.

RU and the Griffins traded baskets coming out of the break but Regis would eventually take a 41-36 advantage on Jacob and Sterkel threes. After five consecutive made baskets from both teams, WC went on to net a pair of layups and closed the period leading 51-47.

Following Jacob's fourth three-pointer of the contest, RU trailed just 56-55 with 6:31 on the clock. An 8-1 scoring stretch from the visitors would eat away nearly four and half minutes and drop Regis into a 66-58 deficit with less than 1:30 to go. Ducklow and Sterkel knocked down desperation triples in hopes of sparking a comeback but the Rangers would ultimately fall 69-64.

Game Notes: Jacob put up a team-best 16 points, going 6-for-14 from the floor while adding two assists and eight rebounds. Sterkel followed with 15 points, also on 6-of-14 shooting, as Snipes added 11 points and four rebounds. Espinosa pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to compliment her four assists.

As a team, Regis shot 34.9% from the field, finishing 22-for-63. From three-point range, RU went 12-of-34 and out-rebounded the Griffins by a margin of 38-32.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis looks to bounce back tomorrow evening as they host Dixie State University at the Regis Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
