DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team came into tonight's contest hoping to gain Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference redemption after last night's loss, but came up short, falling 74-70 to Dixie State University.
How it Happened: The first quarter saw the Rangers take a 7-2 advantage on a trio of baskets from
Elly Walters,
Emma Sterkel and
Shelby Espinosa. The next five minutes were quiet from the Regis offense, going 0-for-7 from the floor to allow a Trailblazers' 9-0 run.
Jaz'Myne Snipes and
McKenna Bishop combined for seven points in the last two and a half minutes, keeping RU up 14-11.
Majestie Robinson drained a three to open the second quarter followed by a couple of jumpers from Jacob and Walters. DSU retaliated to take a five-point edge with just over five minutes remaining before it eventually climbed to nine. Despite a triple from Jacob and layups from Snipes and Nelson, Dixie State held on to lead 38-35 going into the half.
The Rangers generated some much needed momentum coming out of the locker-rooms as Walters and Sterkel knocked down a jumper and triple respectively to regain control of the game. After converting on a three-point play, Jacob bolstered the lead to favor Regis by three but eight unanswered points put control back in the visitor's hands.
Dixie State took their largest lead of the contest in the fourth period, going up by a baker's dozen with 6:38 left on the clock. Regis chipped away at the gap behind a Walters' layup and back-to-back three-pointers from Robinson and
Morgan Ducklow. A second Robinson trey would bring the deficit down to one but the Trailblazers managed to weather the storm and come out the victors 74-70.
Game Notes: Robinson tallied a team-high 17 points along with five steals and two assists. Jacob notched 15 points in addition to eight rebounds while Walters finished with 10 points, four assists and three rebounds. Espinosa tracked down a team-best nine rebounds and dished out four assists while contributing six points.
From the floor, Regis registered a 39.4 shooting percentage and dominated on the boards, collecting 37 compared to the Trailblazers' 28.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis returns to the court next weekend, hosting Fort Lewis College at the Regis Fieldhouse on Friday, January 25. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
