DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team suffered their third consecutive loss this evening at the Regis Fieldhouse as they fell 66-49 to Fort Lewis College.
How it Happened: Six turnovers for the Rangers gave way to a 14-5 advantage in the first quarter for the Skyhawks. Regis shot only 15.4% from the floor, reaping baskets from
Whitney Jacob and
Emma Sterkel.
Jacob opened the second period laying in a basket before
Elly Walters cashed in her first three of the contest, allowing RU to gain some traction and bring the deficit down to six. Behind a twosome of triples from Sterkel and
McKenna Bishop, the gap disappeared to only a two-point difference with 7:04 remaining in the quarter. Trying to find a consistent rhythm on the offensive end proved to be a struggle of titanic proportions, however, as the period closed with them on the wrong end of an 11-3 scoring stretch.
Battling a 29-19 disadvantage coming out of halftime, Regis opened the third quarter with a Jacob lay-in followed by a jumper from Nelson minutes later. At the 2:09 minute-mark, Sterkel fired off a three-pointer from deep, bringing the score to 44-33.
Entering the final 10 minutes of play, the Rangers trailed 48-35. Things did not improve for RU as just three minutes into action the Skyhawks worked to extend their lead to 22 points, the largest of the game. Bishop knocked down a three with 6:20 to go before Nelson netted a jumper. Their efforts would not be enough, though, and FLC sealed the game 66-49
Game Notes: As a team, Regis shot 18-for-65 from the floor for 27.7% while going 6-of-28 at three-point range. Rebounding for the two teams was evenly matched, RU finishing with 41 while FLC pulled down 40. Fort Lewis committed just eight turnovers compared to the Rangers' 12.
Jacob represented a team-high 15 points on 7-of-19 shooting while tracking down nine rebounds. Nelson chipped in 13 points and five rebounds while Sterkel finished with nine points and three rebounds.
Shelby Espinosa led the team in rebounds, pulling down 12 in addition to two assists and a steal.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis picks their schedule back up tomorrow afternoon at the Regis Fieldhouse as they host Adams State University. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM.
