Basso shines as RU sweeps Western Colorado

DENVER, Colo. – No. 16 ranked Regis University (13-3, 7-1 RMAC) won their fourth-straight match with a 3-0 sweep of the Western Colorado University Mountaineers (7-9, 3-5 RMAC) on Friday evening.

How It Happened: Regis was paced by junior Caitlyn Burroway who had 13 kills on the night. The opening set was the best for the Rangers who had an attack percentage of .433 to go along with 17 kills. RU was trailing 9-8 at one point in the set, but a series of runs from the home side quickly changed the momentum in the Regis Field House. Following a kill by senior Nikki Kennedy, Burroway unleashed for three consecutive kills, scoring points 15, 16 and 17 to give Regis a 17-11 lead late in the set. The team closed out the set 25-15 after redshirt-freshman Hannah Kennedy aced her serve.

The next set was the most competitive of the night with the Rangers edging out the Mountaineers by two points, 25-23. This set had the makings of a win for Western Colorado who rattled off four points in a row to take a 19-18 lead. However, RU countered with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 23-19 lead. The Mountaineers once again challenged Regis with another four-point swing to tie the set at 23 points. Thankfully, Burroway took an out-of-system pass from freshman libero Leiana Leong and put her shot away. The Rangers forced an attack error from Western and escaped set two, 25-23.

The final set of the evening featured much of what we saw in the first two sets with the teams exchanging scoring runs throughout the set. In the end, kills from Kennedy and Burroway sealed the deal for the Rangers by way of a 25-20 set three win, completing the 3-0 sweep.

Game Notes: As noted before, Burroway was the match-leader with 13 kills to go along with a .478 attack percentage, but she also recorded her fifth double-double of the season, adding 14 digs in the win. Redshirt-senior Kristen Hornung did not commit an error in 20 attempts (.500 atk %), putting away 10 kills. Kennedy had 11 kills, a .400 attack percentage and three blocks. Hornung led the team once again with four blocks. The final RU player in double-digit kills was senior Izzy Gosar who had 10.

Senior setter Silvia Basso posted an astonishing 14 assists per set in tonight's match with 42 assists in three sets of work. She is making an early case for setter of the week in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) with a performance of that caliber. She will look to continue her high-level play tomorrow night.

Up Next for the Rangers:  The No. 16 ranked Regis University volleyball team will return to the Regis Field House tomorrow evening when Colorado Mesa University comes to battle the Rangers at 3 p.m.
