Hornung matches career-high with 10 blocks as Rangers dismantle Mavericks

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 16 ranked Regis University volleyball team (14-3, 8-1 RMAC) continues to roll, taking down a strong Colorado Mesa University Mavericks team (10-7, 6-3 RMAC) in straight sets, extending their win streak to five matches.

How It Happened: A full on onslaught from the Regis attackers, along with a busy defensive front, led to a 3-0 win over Colorado Mesa University on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers defense held one of the most prolific attackers in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), Kasie Gilfert, to a .000 attack percentage and only six kills in the match. Gilfert leads the conference in kills, but she had a difficult time getting past the RU blockers, most notably by redshirt-senior Kristen Hornung who matched a career-best with 10 blocks in the match.

After set one, Regis settled right into a groove on both ends of the net. Their offense was flowing, the defense seemed impenetrable, and it made the afternoon fly by for head coach Joel List and his staff. There were momentary lapses for the Rangers, but the 25-18 and 25-15 wins in sets two and three, respectively, embraced the essence of the match – domination from RU.

The opening set was the closest of the match with Regis winning by two points, 25-23. From that point on, the Rangers unleashed their offense posting back-to-back attack percentages of .536 in sets two and three. They only committed one error in the final set.

Game Notes: Hornung was the star of the match, and now has a streak of 44 attack attempts without committing an error. The last time she committed an attacking error was on October 4 against the Colorado State University – Pueblo ThunderWolves. Since then she has posted 24 kills in 44 attempts for a .545 attack percentage. She also recorded 10 total blocks in the match, with eight block assists and two solo blocks. After a remarkable performance last night, senior setter Silvia Basso had another great match with 40 assists in three sets. For the weekend, she registered 82 assists in six sets for a 13.67 assists per set average. It will be tough for someone else to make a stronger case for the RMAC Setter of the Week when challenging Basso. In total, RU finished with a .443 attack percentage, which was the highest from Regis in any game this year. The 12 total team blocks were two-shy of the season-best, and it was the fifth time this season that the Rangers had 10+ blocks in a match.

Up Next for the Rangers: The 16th-ranked Regis University Rangers have a two-game road trip next weekend as they travel to Alamosa to face the Adams State University Grizzlies on Friday, October 18 at 7 p.m. The next night, the team will head to Durango to take on the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College at 5 p.m.
