SANTA FE, N.M. – The Regis University women's soccer team took the momentum from last Sunday's decisive victory and came away with a 4-0 win over New Mexico Highlands at City of Santa Fe Municipal Recreation Sports Complex on Friday.
Â
"We accomplished the required three points but no more," said coach
J.B. Belzer. "While [it's] good we had four different scorers, we continue to leave chances begging and must be more clinical in our finishing moments."
Â
How It Happened: Fresh off her hat trick from the previous match, junior forward
Carly Bych rebounded her own shot, which was initially saved in the bottom center of the goal by junior goalkeeper Katherine Scott. Off the rebound, Bych sent another shot past Scott for the Rangers' 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
Â
Bych's goal ended up being the game-winner, but that didn't stop Regis from adding extra insurance.
Â
Freshman forward
Audrey Teague later successfully converted a pass to sophomore forward
Gia Lemley in the 20th minute. Lemley then took the shot to give RU a 2-0 advantage and its first of three insurance goals.
Â
After a foul just seconds into the second half, Teague took advantage of the Rangers' opportunity and sent a penalty kick to the back of the net for Regis' 3-0 lead at the 45:17 mark.
Â
RU concluded its scoring effort with just 15 seconds to go in regulation. Freshman defender
Allison Warta passed to sophomore midfielder
Alyssa Barela, who scored and grew the Rangers' leading margin further to a 4-0 tally.
Â
The Cowgirls had their share of on-target shots during the game and last threatened to score when freshman midfielder/forward Victoria Mares attempted a shot-on-goal in the bottom-center of the goal box in the 86th minute. However, Mares' shot was saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Katelyn Martin.
Â
In fact, Martin earned her first-career shutout for a game in which she played the entire 90 minutes. She recorded four saves in the winning effort.
Â
Regis was the clear aggressor on offense and bested New Mexico Highlands in shots by a 22-10 margin, which included a 10-4 count for shots-on-goal in favor of RU.
Â
Game Notes: Teague (1 G, 1 A, 5 S, 2 SOG) came off the bench and registered both a goal and an assist in the win. Bych (1 G, 5 S, 3 SOG) scored the game-winning goal for the Rangers. Lemley (1 G, 2 S, 2 SOG) had both of her shots on-target. Barela (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) earned a goal on her only shot of the match. Warta (1 A, 2 S, 1 SOG) was credited with Regis' other assist on Barela's goal. Martin (4 SV) recorded her first-career collegiate shutout.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: RU moves to a 7-2-2 record overall and a 5-1-1 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Rangers continue their road trip at CSU-Pueblo (3-5-1, 2-2-1 RMAC) on Sunday. Kickoff at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m.
Â
Belzer hopes his team can apply the lessons learned in the game against NMHU and apply them against the ThunderWolves.
Â
"We always are pleased with a team shutout of an opponent and this defensive mentality and ability will be necessary on Sunday against a quality CSU-Pueblo side that has had our number in recent memory," Belzer said.
