PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team came into Rawlings Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday and led for most of the match before suffering a gut-wrenching 2-1 overtime loss to CSU-Pueblo.
"Lack of efficiency and killer instinct continue to haunt us as evidenced by today's result," said coach
J.B. Belzer. "To be champions in this difficult RMAC, we must find an ability to win 1-0 matches when it counts most."
How It Happened: With the Rangers holding onto a 1-0 lead in the 86th minute, ThunderWolves sophomore midfielder Porsche Nieto scored the 1-1 equalizer after Regis had led for 79 minutes.
Upon the game being forced into overtime, sophomore forward Summer Hatch gave CSUP the lead and the match with her goal at the 96:17 mark. Hatch was assisted on the play by junior midfielder Litzy Serna.
RU jumped on the board early in the game when sophomore forward
Gia Lemley gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of play.
For the match, Regis outshot CSU-Pueblo, 12-10, but had an even more favorable differential on shots-on-goal, 6-3.
Game Notes: Lemley (1 G, 2 S, 2 SOG) scored RU's lone goal and had both her shot attempts on-target. Senior midfielder
Emily Ramos (1 S, 1 SOG) and freshman defender
Allison Warta (1 S, 1 SOG) each had their one shot in the game on-target. Freshman forward
Audrey Teague (2 S, 1 SOG) and junior forward
Carly Bych (2 S, 1 SOG) both had a shot-on-goal among their respective two attempts. Senior midfielder
Tori Rinsem (3 S) had the team-high in shots, while junior midfielder
Sophia Brendle (1 S) had the Rangers' last shot of the game. Junior goalkeeper
Julia Coombs (1 SV) had one save.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis falls to a 7-3-2 record overall and a 5-2-1 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. RU concludes its road trip at Black Hills State (3-8-1, 3-4-1 RMAC).
Despite the loss, Belzer wants his team to set its sights on the Yellow Jackets.
"We'll regroup and go again next week against a much-improved Black Hills State side," Belzer said.
