RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Regis University women's soccer team had to wait an additional day and change venues before it could start and finish its weekend slate due to snow but didn't skip a beat on Monday when it defeated Black Hills State, 5-1, at Sioux Park Stadium.
Â
"We earned an important three points today against an ever-improving BHSU side," said coach
J.B. Belzer. "I complimented the team for handling the adversity of yesterday's no-contest, a missed day of school today and the venue change."
Â
How It Happened: Tied 1-1 late in the 17th minute, senior midfielder
Emily Ramos successfully converted a penalty kick to break the tie and take the lead, 2-1, a margin the Rangers only grew as time went on during the game.
Â
With just minutes to go in the opening half, freshman defender
Ella Palmer fielded a pass from junior forward
Natasha Wehner, and Palmer scored to put Regis up, 3-1, in the 43rd minute.
Â
Just as the 58th minute began, freshman forward
Audrey Teague purposely deflected a ball off a corner kick from senior midfielder
Tori Rinsem. Upon directing the ball towards the goal, it bounced off a Yellow Jackets player and into the back of the Black Hills State net for a 4-1 RU advantage.
Â
The Rangers concluded their offensive tally at the 88:07 mark when junior forward
Carly Bych scored an unassisted goal, giving Regis a sizable 5-1 lead.
Â
RU needed less than 10 minutes to get on the board against BHSU when Teague found freshman midfielder
Madison Hand, who knocked the ball into the goal for an early 1-0 lead with the clock reading 9:05.
Â
The Yellow Jackets evened the score, 1-1, in the 13th minute when junior defender/forward Abigail Carlson kicked the equalizer into the back of the goalbox.
Â
Regis convincingly won the shots count, 19-3, and also had an 11-3 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Â
Game Notes: Ramos (1 G, 3 S, 2 SOG) gave RU the eventual game-winner with her penalty kick. Bych (1 G, 4 S, 3 SOG) had more shots than the entire Black Hills State roster combined. Palmer (1 G, 2 S, 1 SOG) had the last goal of the first half. Hand (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) made the most of her one shot and put the Rangers on the board. Wehner (1 A, 2 S, 1 SOG) assisted on the first of three insurance goals for Regis. Junior goalkeeper
Julia Coombs (2 SV) earned another win on the season while recording a pair of saves.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: RU climbs to an 8-3-2 record overall and a 6-2-1 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Rangers kick off their final homestand of the 2019 season against Colorado Christian (4-9-1, 2-7-1 RMAC) at Regis Match Pitch on Friday at 3 p.m.
Â
With the end of the season fast approaching, Belzer doesn't underestimate the Cougars and believes they have proven they can shake up the conference standings.
Â
"We now turn focus to CCU, who continue to battle with many and us for RMAC Tournament seeding," Belzer said.
