Game Recap: Volleyball |

No. 12 RU wins ninth-straight, conquering UCCS in straight-sets

DENVER, Colo. – 20-straight set wins. That is the streak that the No. 12 ranked Regis University volleyball team (18-3, 12-1 RMAC) owns at the moment, along with a nine-match winning streak. The previous 16-set win streak was extended to 19 on Saturday afternoon with a dominating 3-0 win over the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (9-12, 7-6 RMAC).

How It Happened: It was another offensive blowout for Regis who came off one of their most impressive offensive performances of the season the night before. After hitting a combined .456 last night, the Rangers unleashed for an astonishing .500 attack percentage against the Mountain Lions this afternoon. In fact, it was this UCCS team that took RU to five sets in Colorado Springs on September 20th earlier this season.

The most impressive statistic of the evening was the .636 attack percentage in the opening set. Regis committed only one error in 22 attempts, securing 15 kills. At the same time, the team held the Mountain Lions to a negative attack percentage of -.063 and seven attack errors.

The offense was just flowing through senior setter Silvia Basso who kept finding her attackers with effortless passes. These pocket passes allowed the hitters to unload on their attempts, leading to a huge margin of victory in each set. The largest coming in set one with a 17-point win, 25-8. The final two sets went to the Rangers 25-19 and 25-12.

Game Notes: For the second-straight night, RU has two or more players finish the night with .700+ attack percentages. Last night it was redshirt-senior Kristen Hornung and senior Nikki Kennedy, and today it was Hornung (1.000), redshirt-sophomore Rebecca Abrahamson (.714), senior Izzy Gosar (.700) and Kennedy (.700). Junior Caitlyn Burroway finished the evening with 11 kills and 14 digs to lead the team, two blocks, and a .429 attack percentage. Kennedy posted seven kills and a match-high four blocks, all without committing a single error in any aspect of the match. Basso had another great night, this time managing 38 assists, three digs, two kills, two service aces and a solo block.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 12 ranked Regis University volleyball team hits the road for the next three games. Two of them will take place next weekend when they travel to Black Hills State University on Friday, November 1, followed by a trip to South Dakota School of Mines the next night. That following Tuesday, November 5, the team will take on the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners in a non-conference bout at MSU Denver.
