No. 10 Regis upends Black Hills State 3-0 on the road

Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – The No. 10 ranked Regis University volleyball team (19-3, 13-1 RMAC) is spending their weekend in South Dakota for a two-game road trip. The first stop was to Black Hills State University (10-12,  8-6 RMAC) where they upended the Yellow Jackets in three sets.

How It Happened: After opening up a 4-1 lead, Regis found themselves in a 7-5 hole a few points later. As the match continued, redshirt-senior Kristen Hornung and senior Izzy Gosar combined for a block at the net to take back the lead, 8-7, leading to a 10-0 run for the Rangers. After the lengthy run from RU, the team closed out the set in dominant fashion, 25-14.

The second set featured much of the same from Regis who continued to create open opportunities on the offensive end, but with a 22-14 lead, the Yellow Jackets came storming back to tie the game at 23 points apiece. Thankfully, the Rangers got a big block from Hornung to take a 24-23 advantage, and on the next sequence BHSU was called for a net violation which afforded RU set point, putting the visitors on top, two sets to none.

The Yellow Jackets were ready to end Regis' 22-set win streak in the third set as they took an 8-5 lead early in the set, and they held onto the lead for a majority of the set until the Rangers finally tied the set at 20, and then again at 22. After tying the set at 22, Regis scored the next two points to bring up match point, but BHSU tied the game at 24. The Rangers fought their way back and won the set 26-24 to capture their 23rd set win in a row, and their 10th-straight match win.

Game Notes: RU was once again led by the outstanding play of their senior setter Silvia Basso who recorded 39 assists in the three set win. Gosar was the leading attacker on the night with 14 kills and a .600 attack percentage along with a match-best four total blocks. Senior Nikki Kennedy also posted double-digit kills in the win with 12, adding three blocks herself. Hornung matched Gosar with four blocks and tallied six kills and a team-high three service aces. Overall, the team combined to swing .263 on the night.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 10 ranked Regis University volleyball team will make their way to Rapid City to face the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers tomorrow night at 6 p.m.
