Rangers Push Eagles to Five Sets

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Volleyball team battled Chardon state College (Neb.) to five sets on Tuesday night, but fell to CSC, 3-2 (15-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 8-15). The Rangers drops to 3-21 (1-10 RMAC), while the Eagles improve to 10-13 (3-8 RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chadron jumped out to a big lead in the first set, 7-1, before RU was able to cut into the deficit behind three kills and a Morgan Munro-assisted block from Alayna Pruitt. Jacie Kaniho added a kill, and the Rangers benefited from Eagle errors, but the CSC lead continued to grow. After a late kill by Kailyn Polzin, and a block assisted by Sabrina Landman, Kendal Allaire, and Pruitt, Chadron would prevail, 25-15.

Regis would start the second much stronger, getting a kill from Landman, and a block from Polzin and Lynn Sanders. Cady Knight aced a serve, while Polzin started a short, 4-1 run that included scores by herself and Landman. With the match tied at 15-15, Kaniho put down a kill, and Lauryn Uyemura added an ace, giving RU the 20-19 lead. However, Landman and Polzin couldn't get RU over the hump, and Chadron took the second, 25-22.

CSC took another big lead to start the third, going up 10-2, but Sanders and Polzin assisted a block that started a 7-0 run, which saw three kills from Landman, one from Annelise Miller, and an ace by Polzin. Out of the media timeout, Miller started a new run that included back-to-back kills by Pruitt, and gave RU the 16-15 lead. The teams traded points late, Knight earned a dig kill, and three straight points ended it in the Ranger's favor, 25-22.

The fourth set saw another hot start for the Eagles, going up 6-1, but Miller's offense paced the Rangers, assisted by a Uyemura ace and kill, and consecutive blocks from Sanders, assisted by Pruitt and Polzin. Two straight Miller kills gave RU the advantage, and the block party continued with contributions from Pruitt, Allaire, Polzin, and Landman. Chadron ran four straight for the 23-21 lead, but Regis answered with four of their own, capped by a Lynn Sanders kill for the 25-23 win.

The Rangers slow start in the fifth would prove to be their downfall, as Landman and Polzin recorded kills, but CSC took an 8-3 lead. Miller assisted a block with Allaire, and earned two kills, but the comeback bid fell short, 15-8.
