RU Endures All 110 Minutes in 1-1 Tie With Colorado Mesa

Warta’s late second-half goal sends Rangers to OT with the Mavericks

DENVER – The Regis University women's soccer team battled back from a 1-0 deficit and eventually evened the score and ended in a 1-1 tie with Colorado Mesa on Friday at Regis Match Pitch.

"I have to congratulate our opponent," said coach J.B. Belzer. "They are very disciplined and patient. We had to chase the game. I give our kids credit for figuring out a solution. I think a point was deserved. Three points wasn't in the cards but probably a just result."

How It Happened: At the wrong end of a 1-0 score, freshman defender Allison Warta fielded a pass from sophomore forward Gia Lemley while shallow in Mavericks' territory midway through the 88th minute of regulation. Warta belted a cross shot in the gap between the upper-right corner below the crossbar and above redshirt sophomore Kamrie Gunderson's reach for the 1-1 equalizer.

Prior to finally breaking through on their goal, the Rangers managed to attempt three shots in an 18-second span during the 87th minute from Lemley, freshman forward Audrey Teague and senior midfielder Tori Rinsem. Teague's shot resulted in a save from Gunderson in the bottom center of the goal.

Regis attempted five more shots in overtime. Lemley's shot, the last in the first overtime, was blocked in the 97th minute. RU's final shot of the game came from junior forward Carly Bych in the 109th minute, but it was out left.

Following a scoreless opening frame, Colorado Mesa freshman forward Kristen Capan found the lower-left corner of the net after receiving a pass from senior midfielder Ryanne Parker. Capan's goal put CMU ahead of the Rangers, 1-0, at the 51:56 mark.

Though the match ended in a tie, Regis dominated on offense. RU outshot the Mavericks, 21-7, over the 110 minutes. However, the shots-on-goal differential was much closer as the Rangers edged Colorado Mesa in that tally, 6-5.

Game Notes: Warta (1 G, 2 S, 2 SOG) sent Regis into overtime. Lemley (1 A, 3 S) set up Warta for the game-tying goal. Senior midfielder Emily Ramos (5 S, 2 SOG) had the game-high in shots attempted. Teague (2 S, 1 SOG) and sophomore defender Kyra Midroy (1 S, 1 SOG) each had an on-target shot. Junior goalkeeper Julia Coombs (4 SV) only allowed one goal in the 110-minute game.

Up Next for the Rangers: RU moves to a 5-2-2 record overall and a 3-1-1 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Rangers resume conference play against Western Colorado (0-7-1, 0-3-1 RMAC) at Regis Match Pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Going into Sunday's contest with the Mountaineers, Belzer wants his team to move forward from Friday's deadlocked result.

"Short memory," Belzer said. "You have to quickly regroup; win, loss or tie. Western will present a different challenge. We expect to perform better over the 90 minutes."
