LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Winner of their last three matches, the No. 17 Regis University volleyball team (12-3, 6-1 RMAC) beat the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands University (1-14, 0-7 RMAC) 3-1 on Saturday evening.
How It Happened: In match that heavily favored Regis, NMHU put some pressure on the Rangers with a hefty attack. RU won set one by nine points, 25-16, which would be their largest margin of victory in a set all evening.
After taking set one, Regis jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead after seven points were played. A few points later, the Rangers enjoyed an 11-5 lead, but that lead quickly evaporated at the hands of the Cowgirls. NMHU rattled off six consecutive points towards the end of the match to take a 25-24 lead late. This flipped all of the momentum of set two in favor of the home side. RU tied the score at 25, but the Cowgirls had back-to-back kills to tie the match at one set apiece.
Set three was more even between the teams when Regis held a 18-17 advantage. At that point, seniors
Nikki Kennedy and
Izzy Gosar put away two kills, and freshman
Mara LeGrand earned a service ace. Thosw three points coupled with an error from NMHU gave the Rangers some breathing space at 22-17. The home side crept back into the set with three-straight points, but it was too late for their comeback attempt as kills from Kennedy, junior
Caitlyn Burroway, and senior
Kelsey Green gave RU the 25-22 win in set three.
The fourth and final set started off with a great defensive effort from Gosar and redshirt-senior
Kristen Hornung who each had two blocks within the first three points of the set. Senior
Silvia Basso got in on the action with a service ace and Regis was on top 3-0 to start the set. The Cowgirls then took an 8-7 lead, but two attack errors and kills from Kennedy and Green put the Rangers back in front 11-8. RU extended their lead to 18-11 and looked to be running away with the fourth set, but NMHU countered with six points in a row to cut the Regis lead to one point, 18-17. A few points later, the score was tied at 19 apiece. However, with a 21-20 advantage, the Rangers closed out the game on an impressive 4-0 run to seal 3-1 match victory and a 25-20 set four win.
Game Notes: Gosar was a nightmare for the Cowgirls on Saturday evening, matching a career-best with 18 kills on the night. Green added 14 and Kennedy finished with 13 of her own, but Gosar led the three with a .556 hitting percentage. Hornung and Gosar each tallied three blocks, but it was Kennedy who led the team with four in the match. Basso was marvelous this evening as she recorded 51 assists (12.75 assists per set), setting up her teammates with great passes, leading to a lot of offensive opportunities, and a final attack percentage of .279 for the team.
