Regis Comes Back, Ties MSU Denver, 1-1, in 2OT

Wehner’s late goal on header proves crucial in 110-minute thriller

DENVER – The Regis University women's soccer team dueled Metropolitan State University of Denver to a 1-1 tie that at the end left both teams exhausted but relieved in different respects at The Regency Athletic Complex on Friday.

"I am proud of our resiliency to score a restart goal late and force overtime," said coach J.B. Belzer. "We had chances to win it and couldn't complete the expectation of three points tonight."

How It Happened: Down 1-0 with less than five minutes to go, a collaborative effort involving touches from both junior forward Carly Bych and junior midfielder Keegan Storlie en route to junior forward Natasha Wehner proved successful. A free kick was saved by senior goalkeeper Erica Torres from the far post then went back to the center where Wehner finished with the equalizing header from six yards out in the 86th minute.

With the game in its first overtime, a shot from long range by freshman midfielder Madison Hand headed to the bottom-right corner of the goal but was saved by Torres in the 100th minute.

During the final minute of the second overtime, freshman defender Allison Warta's corner kick arced into a swarm of Rangers and Roadrunners in front of the goal. It was here that both sophomore midfielder Hanna Wallgren and freshman forward Audrey Teague managed to get shots off, but they were both blocked.

Senior midfielder Emily Ramos belted Regis' final shot with just four seconds remaining, but it went straight to Torres with the game ending deadlocked.

RU ended up on the wrong end of a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when junior forward Gabriella Gamboa scored unassisted after rebounding her initial shot from six yards out.

Though the teams were pretty even in shots through regulation with the Rangers edging the Roadrunners, 13-12, Regis finished the game outshooting MSU Denver, 18-13, including a 5-1 advantage spanning the two overtimes. RU also won the shots-on-goal count, 7-6.

Game Notes: Wehner (1 G, 2 S, 1 SOG) tied the game up late. Bych (1 A, 5 S) and Storlie (1 A, 1 S, 1 SOG) both aided in the tying goal. Ramos (2 S, 1 SOG) and sophomore forward Gia Lemley (2 S, 1 SOG) each had one of their two shots on-target, while senior midfielder Tori Rinsem (1 S, 1 SOG) and Hand (1 S, 1 SOG) each had their respective sole shots on-target. Wallgren (3 S, 1 SOG) contributed a shot-on-goal as well. Junior goalkeeper Julia Coombs (5 SV) registered five saves.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers move to a 9-4-3 overall record and a 7-3-2 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. Regis will conclude its regular season at No. 1 UC-Colorado Springs (15-0-0, 11-0-0 RMAC) at Mountain Lion Stadium on Sunday at 11 a.m.

While the prospect of facing the top team in NCAA Division II can be daunting for some teams, Belzer isn't afraid of the challenge that distinction presents.

"We are excited to face the number one team in the nation, and we will give it a run out to show UCCS what we are about," Belzer said.
