COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team went through the full range of emotions against UC-Colorado Springs but prevailed in overtime on junior forward
Jean Carre's efforts with a 3-2 victory on Friday at Mountain Lion Stadium.
"What a finish," said coach
Tony McCall. "That sort of sums up this team in one game. We can be very dynamic. We were very unlucky to go down, 2-1. But, we didn't think we would lose the game. Good teams need a little bit of luck at times. We had the P.K. at 2-2. The two goals we had from open play were world-class."
How It Happened: Tied at 2-2, Carre put himself deep in Mountain Lion territory with little coverage in the 98th minute in the first overtime. With the ball in front of him, Carre drilled the shot past senior goalkeeper Scott Jensen's reach to the lower-right corner of the box for the golden goal.
"There's two or three players you would like to have the ball in that scenario, and
Jean Carre is one of them," McCall said. "He took his time and his finish was sublime. He's a quality player, came in very recommended, and we're starting to see the best of him."
The Rangers claimed a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when Carre passed to sophomore midfielder
Ben Shepherd. Upon receiving the ball, Shepherd hurled the shot into the top-right of the goalbox for Regis' 1-0 lead.
McCall mentioned being very happy for both Shepherd and Carre for their efforts.
In the 69th minute, UCCS senior midfielder Alex Vonholle found redshirt freshman defender Liam McGuire, who directed a shot to the bottom-right of the goal box to knot the game up at 1-1.
The Mountain Lions took advantage of a penalty kick to take a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute when Vonholle won the shootout.
Carre successfully converted a penalty kick of his own to the bottom-right of the goal following a red card that gave RU a one-man advantage in the 78th minute, equalizing the game at 2-2.
The Rangers won the shots game as well, dominating the Mountain Lions, 20-10, and outdid UCCS in shots-on-goal for the match, 8-3.
Game Notes: Carre (2 G, 1 A, 3 S, 3 SOG) had the game-high in goals as well as the game-winner for Regis. Shepherd (1 G, 2 S, 1 SOG) gave RU its first lead and played the entire game. Sophomore forward
Ethan Willson (2 S, 1 SOG) and sophomore midfielder
Michael Jimenez (2 S, 1 SOG) both had one of their two shots on-target. Senior midfielder
Luca Kother (1 S, 1 SOG), who played the whole game, and junior forward
Parker Klein (1 S, 1 SOG) each had an on-goal shot. Junior goalkeeper
Tim Dolan (1 SV) earned the win for the Rangers.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis improves to a 10-5-1 record overall and a 9-3-0 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. RU will next travel to Colorado School of Mines (12-3-2, 10-1-2 RMAC) for a match held at Stermole Soccer Stadium on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Considering the circumstances surrounding Sunday's game against the Orediggers, McCall believes his team is up to the task.
"We're still chasing Mines," McCall said. "I think we're the only team that if we win out, we can catch them. It's a very intense game. Mines has shown they're quality throughout the season. We've shown our resilience, we've shown our character, and we're looking forward to the challenge. It'll be a huge chance for us."
