Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

RU Falls in Regular-Season Finale to MSU Denver, 2-1

Rangers stage comeback late in the game but fall short to the Roadrunners

DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team had to wait several days before it could finally play its long-delayed match with Metropolitan State University of Denver. However, in the end, the Rangers ultimately fell in what ended up being its final 2019 regular-season game, 2-1, to the Roadrunners during Military Appreciation Day at The Regency Athletic Complex on Tuesday.

How It Happened: Down 2-0 in the 80th minute, freshman forward Pascal von Matthey fielded a pass from junior midfielder John Halter. von Matthey received the pass from the left side of the box and shot it into the left side of the net to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

The Roadrunners wasted only a handful of minutes prior to jumping on the board. Upon getting a long pass over the defense from junior defender Ignacio Salas, freshman midfielder Jerry Gutierrez lobbed a kick over junior goalkeeper Tim Dolan's reach from about 10 yards out to give MSU Denver a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

In the 78th minute, the Roadrunners added insurance and the eventual game-winner when sophomore midfielder Gianni Steijlen drilled a shot from the right side 18 yards out. The shot then banged off the left post and into the goalbox for the unassisted 2-0 advantage.

Despite losing the contest, Regis outshot MSU Denver in both shots, 19-8, and shots-on-goal, 11-3.

Game Notes: von Matthey (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) made the game a one-possession match with his goal. Halter (1 A, 2 S, 2 SOG) had RU's only assist and recorded both of his shot attempts on-target. Junior forward Parker Klein (3 S, 2 SOG) and sophomore forward Kristian Hooker (3 S, 2 SOG) both shot most of their shots on-goal. Sophomore forward Ethan Willson (3 S, 1 SOG), freshman forward Aymaro Vargas (2 S, 1 SOG), sophomore midfielder Michael Jimenez (1 S, 1 SOG) and sophomore defender Philip Pedler (1 S, 1 SOG) all registered a shot-on-goal.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers complete the regular season with a 10-6-2 record overall and a 9-3-1 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. With its first-round bye, No. 2-seed Regis will await the winner of the RMAC Tournament first-round match on Thursday at 3 p.m. between No. 3-seed Colorado Mesa (10-4-3, 8-3-3 RMAC) and No. 6-seed Fort Lewis (10-4-4, 8-4-2 RMAC), which will play RU at Regis Match Pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m.
