Ninth-ranked Rangers set program record with 29 set wins in a row, avenge early-season loss to MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. – Ninth-ranked Regis University (21-3, 14-1) avenges their September 27th loss to cross-town rivals, Metropolitan State University of Denver (17-6, 12-2) with a 3-0 sweep on Tuesday evening at the home of the Roadrunners.

How It Happened: During the first two sets, Regis looked to be firmly in control forcing the home side into 20 attack errors in 80 attack attempts with only 20 kills. On the other side of things, the Rangers had 23 kills and only nine errors in 59 attempts.

After the five-minute intermission period between sets two and three, one could tell that MSU Denver did not enjoy the 2-0 deficit they found themselves facing heading into set three. However, RU was up for the challenge that the Roadrunners put forth in set three.

Regis opened the set scoring the first three points, but the home side countered with a 3-0 run of their own. The two teams battled to gain an edge, but each time a team got a little lead, the other side stormed right back. It looked as though the 28-set win streak would come to an end when MSU Denver took an 20-16 lead, but the resilient Rangers scored four of the next five points to cut the lead to one, 20-21.

A few points later, senior Izzy Gosar and redshirt-senior Kristen Hornung landed huge swings to tie the set at 22 points. Finally, with the score still tied at 25-all, junior Caitlyn Burroway put away a swing that set up RU for match-point. As Burroway went back to serve, her serve forced an "over pass" from the Roadrunners and senior setter Silvia Basso was waiting to put home match-point to extend both streaks for Regis.

Game Notes: The Rangers have now won 29 sets in a row, and they have tied the Regis volleyball record for most 3-0 wins in a row (9) dating back to the historic 1998 season in which the team advanced to the National Semifinals. However, the current 29-set win streak is the longest streak of sets won in a row in the history of Ranger volleyball.

Burroway had a match-high 12 kills, with senior Kelsey Green adding 10 and Hornung following with nine of her own. Hornung had a match-best six blocks while freshman Leiana Leong posted 16 kills to lead all players. Basso had 31 assists in the match to go along with six digs and one kill.

Up Next for the Rangers: In three days, the ninth-ranked Regis University volleyball team will host the Dixie State University Trailblazers on Friday, November 8 at 7 p.m. The following day, the Rangers will battle the Griffins of Westminster College at 3 p.m.
