COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team kicked off its run in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament on Friday as the No. 5 seed but fell to No. 4 seed Westminster (Utah), 2-0, at Mountain Lion Stadium.
"Tonight, we did not produce enough quality in the attacking or defending phase to warrant victory," said coach
J.B. Belzer. "We congratulate Westminster and yet know we are capable of higher performance. We salute our four seniors (defender
Abbey Wester, midfielder
Emily Ramos, forward
Chevonne John and midfielder
Tori Rinsem)Â who have given so much to our program during their careers."
Â
How It Happened: Late in the 29th minute, a shot to the upper-right of the goalbox by Griffins senior defender Micah Fredrick crossed the goal plane and gave WC a 1-0 lead. Fredrick's goal, the eventual game-winner, was assisted by senior midfielder Sarah Reiber upon receiving her pass.
Â
Fredrick later assisted on an insurance goal near the end of the 54th minute during which she passed to senior midfielder Jayde Hansen, whose shot entered the goalbox through the bottom-center and put the Rangers at the wrong end of a 2-0 score.
Â
Regis had a couple chances late in the game to cut into the Westminster lead. Senior midfielder
Emily Ramos' 88th-minute shot to the bottom-right of the goalbox gave RU some hope, but it was saved by graduate goalkeeper Hillary Weixler.
Â
Following a foul, freshman midfielder
Madison Hand attempted a penalty kick in the 89th minute. However, Weixler preserved the shutout for the Griffins.
Â
The Rangers trailed WC in shots, 16-11, but had the advantage in shots-on-goal over Westminster, 5-4.
Â
Game Notes: Hand (2 S, 2 SOG) had both of her shots, including a penalty kick, on-target. Ramos (1 S, 1 SOG) had her one shot on-goal for the match. Sophomore forward
Gia Lemley (2 S, 1 SOG) and freshman defender
Ella Palmer (2 S, 1 SOG) both contributed a shot-on-goal.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis falls to a 9-6-3 record overall with the loss. RU will await its season fate with the unveiling of the South Central Region bracket for the NCAA Tournament in the days to come.
