CHADRON, Neb. – The Regis University men's basketball team keeps rolling and finding ways to win in 2019. This time, Regis (7-1, 2-0 RMAC) traveled to Chadron State College and beat the Eagles (2-6, 1-1 RMAC) 97-89 behind a career-night from senior
Christian Little.
How It Happened: Little got things started early by scoring the first four points for the Rangers. Pretty soon after that, RU would find themselves trailing 24-15 and 35-22 in the opening half. However, a late first half run by Regis in which they scored 14 unanswered points helped them take a 42-41 lead near the halftime break. At the break, CSC managed to close out the half with a couple buckets and the score was 46-44 as the teams headed to their locker rooms.
Freshman
Will Cranston-Lown opened up the scoring in the second half but the Eagles quickly went back up by five, 51-46. A few possessions later, sophomore
Toni Rocak knocked down a jump shot and was fouled on the play. After his made free throw that tied the game at 51, junior
Brian Dawson was fouled and made both of his attempts to give the lead back to Regis, 53-51. Leads changed hands a few times down the stretch, but with a six-point, 89-83 lead, with only 1:30 on the clock, the Rangers just needed to waste some time and score on their offensive trips down the floor. That is exactly what they did. The team made their shots and their free throws in the final minute of play and they walked away with a 97-89 win.
Game Notes: Little was dominant from the start of the game, finding his way to the basket and finishing tough shots. He ended up scoring a career-high 32 points on 9-of-17 shooting with two made three-point shots on four attempts. He was 12-of-15 from the charity stripe and he also had eight rebounds, three steals and two assists. Rocak (5-15 FG, 9-12 FT, 9 REB) and Dawson (4-7 FG, 9-9 FT, 2-2 3-PT) were next with 19 points apiece. These three accounted for nearly 70 percent of the team's output tonight with 67 of the 97 points scored. As a whole, RU shot 44.6 percent from the field, and 35.3 percent from deep. They scored 28 points in the paint and had 14 fast break points. Even more impressive was that they were able to convert on 41 of 48 attempts (85.4 percent) from the free throw line.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University men's basketball team will return home for their next three games. The first set of games will be played next week when the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions come to the Regis Field House for a game at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 13. The next night, the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers will pay a visit to the Field House for a 5 p.m. game time.
