Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rangers Hang on to Earn 49-45 Win at Home

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team exacted revenge on Western State Colorado University this evening, sneaking away with a 49-45 victory at the Regis Field House.

How it Happened: After the first half of play, it was evident that neither team was going to run away with the victory. The Mountaineers managed to take a 6-2 advantage but behind a Majestie Robinson trey, the lead was quickly cut down to one. With just under two minutes to go in the quarter, Morgan Ducklow and Whitney Jacob knocked down a pair of triples to close the first quarter trailing 14-13.

Western recorded their largest lead of the half in the second quarter at the 4:40 minute mark as a jumper in the paint put them up by six. Determined to erase the deficit, the Rangers regained control after Shelby Espinosa and Jaz'Myne Snipes knocked down four straight free throws followed by a Jacob layup. Snipes closed out the quarter with another two points and gave RU a 26-24 edge.

Jacob opened the third period cashing in a bucket from downtown to extend the Regis lead to five. The Mountaineers used the rest of the period to continuously chip away at the gap before eventually knotting things at 35 apiece with 2:41 on the clock. An Espinosa layup gave the lead back to the Rangers, but Western managed to cap the quarter with a three-pointer to put themselves back on top.

A Regis eight-point run to open the final period went unanswered by the visitors for over a minute. Western slowly reduced the difference to one basket but RU held on to seize a 49-45 win.

Game Notes: Jacob paced all scorers with 17 points, shooting 6-for-14 from the floor. Behind her followed Ducklow with eight points while Snipes finished with six. Jacob and Espinosa both pulled down 10 rebounds apiece.

As a team, Regis shot 33.3% from the field, going 17-of-51. Behind the arc they shot 5-for-22 for 22.7% and finished with a 76.9 charity stripe percentage. The Rangers committed 19 turnovers but forced 20 from the Mountaineers.

Up Next for the Rangers: Next up for RU is the 19-2 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks. The Rangers host CMU at the Regis Field House tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm.
