DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team (13-11, 9-10 RMAC) suffered a 71-55 loss this afternoon to top-ranked Colorado Mesa University (20-3, 17-2 RMAC) at the Regis Field House.
How it Happened: A 2-for-12 shooting slump from the Rangers left them trailing 15-7 after the first period of play. Five minutes into the action,
Whitney Jacob nailed an equalizing free-throw but CMU capped the remaining time with a 10-2 run that shut down scoring production for RU.
Regis finally woke up in the second quarter but was limited to 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, resulting in a 10-point deficit at the half.
Elly Walters converted on a three-point play by muscling home a layup after being fouled to make the score 27-16 with 6:12 on the clock. The Rangers' next field goal wouldn't come for another four minutes and 16 seconds. RU did manage to knock down seven consecutive free throws before trialing 36-26 heading into the third.
At the 5:01 minute mark, the Mavericks took their largest lead of the game and pulled ahead 44-28. But behind a layup by Jacob and five straight points from Walters, the Rangers battled back to bring the difference down to single digits at 48-39 going into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Regis was outscored 23-16 by Mesa.
Morgan Ducklow and Jacob converted on a pair of buckets in an attempt to revive the Rangers but it was too little too late as the home team went on to fall 71-55.
Game Notes: Walters shot 5-for-8 from the floor to finish with a team-leading 13 points while
Shelby Espinosa and Ducklow both notched 10 points apiece. Espinosa added 10 rebounds while Jacob tracked down another 10 rebounds to compliment her eight points.
As a team, Regis shot 35.4 percent from the floor on 17-for-48 shooting. Both teams finished with 29 rebounds and 15 turnovers.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis is back on the court next weekend as they travel to Utah to take on Dixie State University on Friday evening at 5:00pm in St. George and Westminster College on Saturday night at 5:30pm in Salt Lake City.
