DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team (1-4) collected their first win of the season this afternoon as they routed Adams State University (0-10) 13-5 in six innings at the Regis Softball Field in a non-conference match-up.
How it Happened: Adams State struck first in the contest, recording a run in the top of the second after a double sent a Grizzly rounding the bases.
The Rangers answered in the bottom of the third with a quartet of runs. A single straight up the middle from
Carly Beard drove home
Macy Cox, who earned a base on balls to kick off the inning.
Jessi Case followed with a second single up the middle and after snatching third on an errant throw by ASU, would score on a
Kynra Nelson hit to left field. Nelson herself touched home plate as a result of
Analece Apodaca's triple off the center field fence. Apodaca later added the fourth run on a bases loaded walk to
Maisie Mortimer.
Regis extend their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth as
Allisha Martinez, Nelson and Apodaca all recorded runs. The Adams State bats came alive in response as they collected four runs in the top of the fifth to make it a two-run contest.
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth, Case stepped up to the plate and put a ball in play to bring around Cox for her second run of the game. Martinez followed with a two-run double down the left field line before
Tori Brown batted in another pair of insurance runs off her second double of the game to make the score 12-5.
After a run-less sixth inning from the Grizzlies, Regis sealed the game as a wild pitch with bases loaded brought Beard home, effectively enforcing the mercy rule and giving RU the 13-5 victory.
Game Notes: Apodaca finished the day going 3-for-4 at the plate and recording two runs and three RBIs. Case also recorded three hits on four at-bats while adding two runs and one RBI. Martinez and Brown both tallied three RBIs on one and two hits respectively.
Taylor Armitage earned the win after six innings of work in the circle. She allowed eight hits while recording three strikeouts.
Up Next for the Rangers: Due to the possibility of inclement weather, Sunday's double-header with Adams State will be determined tomorrow. Please check the Regis website as well as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more updates.
