DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University softball team rounded up a pair of wins this afternoon after they defeated Adams State University (0-12) 10-2 and 5-4 to put them at 3-3 on the year.
How it Happened | Game One: The Rangers lit up their end of the scoreboard first in game one as
Tori Brown crushed a double to center field that brought around
Allisha Martinez, who reached on a single up the middle earlier in the inning.
Kynra Nelson added to the Ranger lead in the bottom of the second, coming home after Martinez knocked a double to the gap in right center. Two more runs from
Macy Cox and
Laura Scheffel in the next inning gave Regis a 4-0 advantage.
Cox and Scheffel opened the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back doubles, extending the difference to 5-0 before Nelson and
Analece Apodaca batted in a pair of RBIs to move RU to 7-0.
Adams State finally earned runs in the top of the sixth but they were immediately answered by pinch runner
Liberty Justus, Scheffel and
Shelby Shepherd adding a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame. With the score at 10-2, the mercy rule came into play, giving Regis the 1-0 edge on the day.
Game Notes: Scheffel finished with a team-leading three runs on two hits in addition to two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. Cox followed with two runs, two hits and as many stolen bases while Nelson paced the Rangers with three RBIs on three hits.
In the circle for Regis,
Maisie Mortimer put in six innings of work to finish with two runs on four hits and three strikeouts.
How it Happened | Game Two: Adams State opened the scoring in the second game, recording a run in the top of the second on a long single through the right side. Scheffel needed no further motivation and addressed the Grizzlies' 1-0 lead with a crushed homerun ball over the left field fence to knot the score.
ASU regained control of the game in the top of the fourth as a fielding error allowed a run to cross home plate before a two-run double extended their lead to 4-1. Sheffel, unimpressed with the Grizzlies' persistence, stepped up to the plate and delivered her second dinger of the afternoon, scoring Cox with it.
The Rangers held Adams State scoreless in the fifth and as the snow began to set in, Apodaca took matters into her own hands and clobbered a ball that would go yard for the third homerun of the contest, bringing
Madison Flores along for the ride to put RU on top 5-4.
With dropping temperatures and increased snowfall, it was determined that play could no longer continue and Regis finished the day 2-0 with the 5-4 win.
Game Notes: Scheffel added two homers on two hits with three RBIs to her resume to pace RU while Apodaca collected one homerun on two hits for three RBIs.
Taylor Armitage wrapped up the day with three strikeouts and four runs on eight hits in the circle.
Up Next for the Ranges: RU welcomes New Mexico Highlands University to the Regis Softball Field next weekend as they enter into a double-header on Saturday at 12pm and 2pm followed by a second double-header on Sunday at 11am and 1pm.
