SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – The Regis University softball team kicked off the season this afternoon with a 6-1 loss to St. Mary's University in the opening day of the St. Mary's Tournament in San Antonio, Texas.
How it Happened: The Rattlers opened up the scoring in the first inning, collecting three straight hits that led to a bases loaded situation with no outs for the Rangers. In the circle,
Taylor Armitage notched two strikeouts before allowing a walk and the Rattlers' first run of the afternoon.
The next two innings were quite from both teams, with Regis collecting no hits while St. Mary's was held to just one.
RU went three up, three down in the fourth inning before giving up a pair of runs to SMU on five hits. St. Mary's continued to add to their advantage, rattling off three runs in the sixth on a pair of singles and a stolen base to put them ahead 6-0.
Regis finally found their offensive voice in the seventh as they reaped their first run on a
Laura Scheffel homerun that sailed over the left center fence. The lone dinger wouldn't be enough to rally the Rangers, however, and they would fall 6-1 in their first contest of the season.
Game Notes: Armitage picked up the loss, giving up four earned runs through 5.2 innings of work. Scheffel and
Kynra Nelson led the way with one hit apiece while
Carly Beard amassed a team-high six putouts.
Up Next for the Rangers: The softball team heads back to the diamond tomorrow morning as they continue the tournament with Texas A&M University-Kingsville. First pitch will be at 11:15 AM.
