Rangers Defeat Mountain Lions, Fall to FLC

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University softball team split day one of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and Fort Lewis College pod-series this afternoon, claiming a 2-1 win over UCCS before falling 9-7 to the Skyhawks.

Game One | How it Happened: After two scoreless innings from both teams, Macy Cox stepped up to put Regis on the board in the top of the third, via a moonshot that cleared the left-center fence for an early 1-0 RU edge.

Behind a solid performance from the defense and Taylor Armitage in the circle, the Rangers held the Mountain Lions to four unproductive innings, giving up no runs and just two hits.

In the top of the seventh, Carly Beard unleased her own long ball and ripped a solo homer to right field that extended the Ranger advantage to 2-0.

UCCS attempted to rally in the bottom frame as the Mountain Lions put up one run following two walks and a single up the middle. With runners in scoring position and just one out, Regis held steady and behind a pair of strikeouts from Armitage and a putout at second base, the Rangers held on to win 2-1.

Game Notes: Cox and Beard tallied the only hits for Regis while Armitage collected six strikeouts and just four hits through 25 faced batters.

Game Two | How it Happened: With a big win under their belt from the opening contest, Regis looked for a second victory in the finale. Late scoring by the Skyhawks during the fifth and sixth inning proved to be too much for the Rangers to handle, however.

RU was first to strike, garnering a run in the first inning as Tori Brown recorded a fielder's choice to advance Kynra Nelson home, guided by a FLC throwing error. The Skyhawks immediately answered in the following frame and racked up a pair of runs to shift the lead.

Following a Nelson single to left field, Allisha Martinez found her way home to knot the score at two apiece before Cox and Jessi Case tallied one run each to push the advantage to 4-2.

A second homerun from FLC closed the gap by one and after a silent fourth inning from both teams, Regis grossed another pair of runs at the bat of Brown with a two RBI double to left center.

Despite the three-run advantage that Regis held heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Skyhawks were able to put together back-to-back three-run innings, bypassing the Rangers to regain control at 9-6.

Cox opened the seventh inning rocketing her second solo homerun on the day to counter the deficit but Regis would ultimately come up short, falling 9-7.

Game Notes: Brown paced RU, going 2-for-4 at the plate to bring home three RBIs while Cox finished with two runs. In the circle, Maisie Mortimer got the start, recording three strikeouts while allowing five earned runs.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis completes the three-team pod series tomorrow afternoon as they look for redemption against the Skyhawks at 12pm before facing UCCS at 2pm.
