Regis Wraps up Colorado Springs Trip With Split

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University softball team (11-10, 8-7 RMAC) finished the weekend in Colorado Springs picking up a win and loss as they took down Fort Lewis College 9-1 before dropping their contest with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 10-4.

Game One | How it Happened: Regis used heavy offense in game one as three homeruns from as many Rangers built a deficit that the Skyhawks could just not overcome.

Macy Cox continued her strong weekend of hitting by going yard for a third time, this one sailing over the left field fence and bringing home Kynra Nelson with it. Carly Beard added to the first inning scoring-spurt, tallying a run off a Tori Brown single to right field before a pitch struck Laura Scheffel with bases loaded to move runners and score Brown for a 4-0 advantage.

After two stifling innings of defense from Regis, FLC came alive in the third inning to record three hits that gave way to their only run in the contest. Allisha Martinez responded in the next frame with the second homerun of the game before Beard crushed a three-run dinger over right center to extend the lead to 8-1.

Following a three-up, three-down outing from the Skyhawks in the top of the fifth, Regis garnered a ninth and final run from pinch runner Carly Gray, enforcing the mercy-rule and giving the Rangers redemption from yesterday's 9-7 defeat.

Game Notes: Taylor Armitage picked up the win for RU, pitching all five innings. She conceded five hits and one earned run while striking out three.

At the plate, Beard went 2-for-3, collecting one homerun and one double to bring in three RBIs. Cox followed with two RBIs and Nelson earned two runs in addition to two stolen bases.

Game Two | How it Happened: In the nightcap, the Mountain Lions rattled off four unanswered runs through two innings, creating early distance between themselves and the Rangers.

A double to center field by Martinez in the top of the fourth scored Brown before Morgan Stradley capitalized on a wild pitch and put a second run on the board.

In the fifth, Beard lofted a two-run homer over the heads of UCCS to equalize at 4-4, but, despite all three bags later becoming occupied, no further damage was done by the Rangers in the inning.

The Mountain Lions recaptured the lead after putting up three runs in the bottom of the fifth only to follow it up with another trio of runs in the sixth. Regis fought to put opportunities on the bases in the final inning but their efforts fell short in the 10-4 UCCS victory.

Game Notes: Armitage earned the start in game two as well, collecting three strikeouts while giving up seven earned runs. Rachel Jones came in as relief after 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run while striking out as many.

Beard led Regis with two RBIs on two hits while Brown also tallied a pair of hits to go 2-for-3.

Up Next for the Rangers: RU now gears up for a road trip to St. George, Utah as they look to face Dixie State University in a four-game series on March 30. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12pm.
