DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (8-17, 3-9 RMAC) defeated No. 23 Colorado School of Mines (15-8, 6-6 RMAC) 9-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon, leading to a series split.
How It Happened: The Rangers gained control of the game in the bottom of the second inning, connecting three hits that led to a 3-0 lead they would not surrender.
The RU offense came alive after senior
Logan Heflebower recorded the first RU hit of the game with a base-knock up the middle. Sophomore
Thomas Alexander followed with what could've been a 6-4-3 double-play, but both Heflebower and himself beat the throw, placing two runners on base with zero outs. The designated hitter, freshman
Ben Kittay, then laid down a successful sacrifice-bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Senior
Mickey Meinhofer recorded his first and only hit of the series when he tallied a 2-RBI single to left field, scoring the runners and giving way to a 2-0 Regis lead. Two batters later, freshman
Jacob Barr sent Meinhofer home, recording his first career RBI on a triple to right field.
The Rangers went on to create an 8-0 cushion with five more runs in the fourth inning. A single through the right side by senior
Connor Rochon loaded the bases with just one out. Rochon's hit advanced juniors
Kennedy Phillips and Ryan Teirney, who got on board via a single and a walk, respectively, to second and third. RU used three Orediggers' wild pitches to take advantage of the bases-loaded, one-out situation. The wild pitches resulted in two of the five fourth inning Regis runs.
Sophomore
Colin King, who got the start on the mound, held the Orediggers scoreless through five innings of work. In that time, he faced 22 batters, fanning three of them and allowing just five hits. The Rangers defense and relief pitcher
Tyce O'Neill, kept the scoreless game rolling through the top of the sixth inning, allowing RU to score a run and take their largest lead of the game, 9-0, in the bottom frame.
Regis scored their sixth inning run without recording a single hit. It looked as if the Rangers would be retired in order, but Heflebower sprinted to first base to get on board after a dropped third strike. He made his way to the opposite corner after stealing second and advancing to third on an Orediggers' throwing error. Heflebower scored the final RU run of the game on yet another Orediggers' wild pitch that reached the back-stop.
Colorado School of Mines scored the last two runs of the game as Regis held on to earn the series split, 9-2.
Game Notes: Heflebower, Kittay and Phillips, who hit in the five, six and seven holes, all recorded two hits. All three were 2-for-4 with two singles while Heflebower and Kittay added an RBI. Meinhofer went 1-for-5 and tallied a team-high two RBI's. Heflebower accounted for a game-high three runs. The Rangers outhit the Orediggers 11-8.
RU used a five-man rotation to take out Colorado School of Mines. King (1-3) earned his first win of the season after five innings of work.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will play eight-straight road games beginning with a four-game series against Cross-Town rival Metropolitan State University of Denver set to start on Friday, March 29 at 6 p.m. in Denver, Colorado.
