Rangers Fall in Extra Innings, Roadrunners Sweep Doubleheader

DENVER, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University Denver Roadrunners (20-7, 13-2 RMAC) used an extra-inning, walk-off run to put a cap on their doubleheader sweep over the Regis University baseball team (8-20, 3-12 RMAC). The Rangers, who were shutout 0-7 in the first game, relinquished four unanswered runs to fall 3-4 in the nightcap.

How It Happened | Game One: The Roadrunners starting pitcher, Logan Soole, made it difficult for the Rangers to get any offensive momentum, holding RU to three total hits. All three runners that reached base were left stranded.

Regis placed just two runners in scoring position, but neither were able to advance to third.

MSU-Denver had a 0-6 advantage after the first two innings of play, scoring all six runs on six hits and an error. The Roadrunners scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the game 0-7.

Game Notes | Game One: Junior Coby Zimmerman, and seniors Connor Rochon and Mickey Meinhofer recorded the only hits for the Rangers. Rochon, who recorded the first RU hit of the game, doubled in the first inning.

Freshman Justin Kleinsorge (0-5) was given the loss after allowing six runs on six hits in two innings of work. Kleinsorge retired two batters on strikes. For the Raodrunners, Soole hurled all seven innings, allowing zero runs on three hits.

How It Happened | Game Two: Regis claimed their first lead of the day, scoring three runs on two hits in the first inning of the nightcap. Zimmerman, the Rangers clean-up batter, hit a two RBI-double down the left field line to give RU a 2-0 advantage. His hit sent sophomore Thomas Alexander and Rochon home. The two reached base via a fielders' choice and a hit-by-pitch, respectively. Two batters later, senior Logan Heflebower hit a two-out double to left center, sending Zimmerman home and stretching the Regis lead to 3-0.

The Rangers lead began to slip away early in the game. The Roadrunners climbed back into contention after scoring one run on one hit in the first and second innings.

Rochon, who reached first base on an infield error in the top of the third, stole second and advanced to third when the Roadrunners' catcher missed the mark while trying to throw him out at second. The next three batters were retired in order, leaving Rochon stranded on the corner.

The Roadrunners later tied the game at three with one run on two hits in the sixth inning. Neither team was able to score in the seventh, sending the game into extra-innings. MSU-Denver loaded the bases with zero outs in the ninth and ended up scoring the winning run by beating the force-out at home.

Game Notes | Game Two: The RU offense stalled after the first inning and did not record a hit in seven consecutive innings. They were outhit 3-7. Alexander joined Rochon and Zimmerman as the three Regis batters to collect a hit.

Sophomore Scott Vinceri was given the loss. He pitched allowed one run on one hit in and fanned two batters in one inning of work. Freshman Brayden Brooks got the start for the Rangers. He went five complete innings, allowing three runs on three hits
