ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Regis University softball team (11-14, 8-11 RMAC) was downed 9-0 and 6-1 this afternoon by Dixie State University (23-8), 17-7 RMAC) in St. George, Utah.
Game One | How it Happened: The Trailblazers didn't hold back as they came out swinging in the top half of today's doubleheader. After two innings of action, they had taken a staggering 7-0 lead that left Regis fighting for offensive production.
DSU kicked off the contest with a pair of runs in the first inning before tallying another five in the second frame while the Rangers went 3-up, 3-down through three consecutive outings.
Another two runs for Dixie State in the bottom of the third put the host team up 9-0. With a looming possibility of the mercy-rule coming into effect, the Rangers earned two hits off an
Analece Apodaca single to shortstop before Morgan Stadley reached on a hit up the middle. RU failed to convert and after leaving the pair on base, fell 9-0 to the Trailblazers.
Game Notes: Regis used three pitchers in the opening contest with
Taylor Armitage getting the start. She recorded one strikeout and one earned run in 13 faced batters before
Rachel Jones came in after 1.2 innings to collect one strikeout and two earned runs.
Game Two | How it Happened: Dixie State opened the scoring in the second game as well, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after one inning. Regis looked as if they might garner a run in the top of the third as
Laura Scheffel reached via a walk before a fielder's choice allowed
Macy Cox to make it to first. The Rangers were stopped short and their dry-spell continued.
RU allowed four more runs throughout the next three innings to fall into a 6-0 hole. It wouldn't be until the sixth inning when Apodaca stepped up to the plate and delivered a home run ball over the left field fence that their side of the scoreboard lit up.
It was too little too late, however, and the Rangers fell victim to a 6-1 loss and the 4-0 sweep in St. George.
Game Notes: In the circle, Armitage allowed six earned runs with four strikeouts.
Maisie Mortimer came in as relief to collect one strikeout.
Tori Brown and Apodaca recorded the only two hits in the contest.
Up Next for the Rangers: RU picks back up next weekend with their final home contest of the season. They host the Colorado School of Mines in a doubleheader on Saturday with a 12pm first pitch.
