Rangers Drop Twin Bill to Colorado School of Mines

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team (11-16, 8-13 RMAC) suffered a Colorado School of Mines (18-12, 17-5 RMAC) sweep this afternoon as they fell 9-3 in the first half of the twin-bill before dropping the nightcap 6-3.

Game One | How it Happened: Regis battled with the Orediggers from start to finish in the first game, tying the contest in two different innings before finally allowing a six-run explosion by Mines in their final two outings.

The Rangers fell behind early as CSM worked to earn two quick runs in the top of the first. Analece Apodaca answered with a hard-hit ball to generate the first of three Oredigger errors and allow Kynra Nelson to reach home.

In the bottom of the fourth, Macy Cox put the equalizer on the board thanks to a Laura Scheffel sacrifice bunt. The score didn't stay knotted for long as Mines promptly garnered a run in the top of the fifth to make the score 3-2.

A solo homerun at the bat of Tori Brown in the next inning balanced out the score again, showing that RU would not go down without a fight.

The next two innings did not fare well for Regis, however, as the Orediggers brought in six unanswered runs. The 9-3 gap ultimately proved to be too much and despite putting a pair of Rangers in scoring position in the sixth, RU started the afternoon 0-1.

Game Notes: In the circle for Regis was Taylor Armitage. She recorded six innings of work, allowing seven earned runs while striking out three.

Kynra Nelson collected a team-high two hits. As a team, the Rangers tallied no errors and stole four bases against CSM while leaving eight on base.

Game Two | How it Happened: Determined to reap a win on the day, Regis came out tenaciously and sunk the Orediggers into a 3-0 hole following a powerful third inning in the second game.

Allisha Martinez opened the scoring by reaching on a fielder's choice to bring up Brown who ripped a double to left center field and sent Martinez rounding the bases. Apodaca joined in on the offensive fun and offered up a two-run homerun over center field fence scoring Brown and putting Regis ahead 3-0.

In spite of that, the next four innings saw the Rangers' offense slow, limited by the Orediggers who allowed them just three more hits. Mines' scoring power, on the other hand, intensified as they rattled off all six of their runs of a pair of singles and as many doubles to finish the sweep with a 6-3 finale.

Game Notes: Cox and Michelle Larose both tallied two hits apiece while Apodaca led in RBIs with two. Nelson and Morgan Stradley finished with two stolen bases each.

Maisie Mortimer put in six innings in the nightcap, recording four earned runs and one strikeout.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis is back on the diamond tomorrow morning as they face the Orediggers in the final two games of the four-game series. Tomorrow will serve as senior day for the Rangers with first pitch set at 11am.
