GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University softball team (12-19, 9-15 RMAC) traveled to Grand Junction, Colorado to take part in the Colorado Mesa University (32-6, 25-3 RMAC) and Colorado State University-Pueblo (9-21, 8-18 RMAC) pod series this afternoon.
Game One | How it Happened: In the first game, Colorado Mesa took early control with a four-run opening inning. They immediately reinforced it with another three runs in the second inning before eventually extending their lead to 13-0 in the bottom of the third.
Regis earned one of their two hits in the top of the first on a
Macy Cox single before
Carly Beard slugged a second hit to left field in the fifth frame.
Morgan Stradley followed Beard to first via a walk while
Laura Scheffel drew a base after being struck by a wild pitch to load the bases. The Rangers, falling just short of yielding a run went on to suffer a five-inning 13-0 loss.
Game Notes: RU used three pitchers in the first half of the doubleheader with
Maisie Mortimer earning the start. Mortimer allowed six runs while
Cortney Sexton, who came in as relief in the second inning, conceded seven. Nelson tallied a team high four putouts.
Game Two | How it Happened: Game two against the ThunderWolves followed a similar plot line with CSU-Pueblo taking the contest 10-2 after five innings as well.
Tori Brown kicked off the scoring in the first inning with a double to right center that brought in
Jessi Case but the Pack was quick to jump on opportunities at the plate. They swiftly recorded three straight hits to equalize at 1-1 then rattled off another four hits to garner three runs.
CSU-Pueblo continued with a fifth run in their second inning outing and another five between the fourth and fifth innings. Regis managed to gain a second run in the top of the third frame after Case capitalized on ThunderWolves miscues but couldn't make up the ground necessary to prevent the run-ruled ending.
Game Notes: Case finished with a team-best two hits, including one double as well as both runs while Brown recorded a double and one RBI.
Carly Beard led the team in putouts with seven.
In the circle,
Taylor Armitage gave up 10 earned runs through four innings but struck out four and finished with no walked batters.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis returns for redemption against Colorado Mesa and CSU-Pueblo tomorrow afternoon with games starting at 12pm and 2pm.
