Game Recap: Softball |

Rangers Hold off Grizzlies in Opener, Blanked in Game Two

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Coming off a 1-3 weekend, the Regis University softball team (14-21, 11-18 RMAC) was eager to get back on the winning track with their Adams State University (11-32, 11-20 RMAC) matchup. The Rangers took the series advantage with a 5-2 victory in the afternoon's opener, but the Grizzlies used consistent scoring in the second half of the doubleheader to spilt the day 1-1.

Game One | How it Happened: Regis scored first in game one as a Macy Cox double down the left-field line pushed Kynra Nelson across the plate in the first frame. Morgan Stradley helped add to RU's advantage, sacrifice flying to center to bring around Cox later that inning. ASU went on to respond with a run in the bottom half of the first.

A quiet second inning gave way to a monster leadoff homerun over center field from Tori Brown in the top of the third, extending the Ranger lead to 3-1. Undeterred, the Grizzlies returned the gesture with a homerun of their own in their next outing.

The Rangers' resilience shone through in their final at-bat, however. Cox added the first of two insurance runs on Brown's sac fly before Stradley ripped a solo homerun shot over center field. On the defensive side, Taylor Armitage sealed her complete-game victory by throwing a fourth straight scoreless inning, ending the contest 5-2 Rangers.

Game Notes: Armitage forced four strikeouts while allowing just one earned run and five hits through 25 faced batters.

Brown and Stradley both finished with two RBIs apiece, hitting 2-for-3 and 1-of-3 at the plate respectively. Cox tallied two runs on two hits and recorded a game-high six putouts.

Game Two | How it Happened: The Ranger winning-streak was cut short in the second game with Regis stumbling 8-0 in six innings to the Grizzlies.

Adams State put up two runs in the first frame followed by six more through four innings with one in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth.

Regis threatened in the third and fourth innings with runners in scoring position but failed to generate any revenue to ultimately drop the contest 8-0.

Game Notes: Maisie Mortimer picked up the loss for Regis. She notched two strikeouts while giving up six earned runs. Carly Beard recorded a team-best two hits in three at bats while Cox totaled eight putouts.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis wraps up the remaining two games in the four-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 11am.
