ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Regis University softball team (15-22, 12-19 RMAC) wrapped up their day-two doubleheader against Adams State University (12-33, 12-21 RMAC) in a split with a 7-2 win in game one before falling 11-10.
Game One | How it Happened: The Rangers never trailed in the first game, jumping out to a 1-0 advantage in inning one as
Morgan Stradley singled up the middle to bring home
Macy Cox who reached on a double earlier in the frame.
Cox helped build the Regis lead to 2-0 after she went yard for a solo homerun to center field in the third inning while
Laura Scheffel drew inspiration from the dinger and rocketed her own homer down the left field line two innings later.
The seventh inning saw RU reap a quartet of runs with three of them coming at the bat of
Tori Brown. With two away, Brown drove a single down the right field line sending home Cox,
Kynra Nelson and Scheffel. Stradley followed with a triple to right, easily scoring Brown who cemented a 7-0 run margin.
The Grizzlies used an ASU homerun and a pair of Regis fielding errors in the bottom of the final frame to muster up two runs before eventually falling 7-2 to the Rangers.
Game Notes: Taylor Armitage was rock solid in the circle for Regis in game one, collecting five strikeouts and restricting Adams State to just four hits. Beard went 2-for-4 at the plate, recording one run and a team-best three RBIs. Stradley finished 2-for-4 as well while bringing in two RBIs.
Game Two | How it Happened: Despite their best efforts, the Rangers did not finish with a sweep on the day and suffered an 11-10 loss in the second game.
Regis struck first, garnering a pair of runs in the opening inning on a Brown double that scored Cox and Nelson. ASU wasted no time equalizing as they put up two of their own runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Nelson gave the lead back to RU on a triple to left field that scored Scheffel and
Jessi Case before Brown cleared the left center fence with a two-run dinger to pad Regis' lead 6-2.
The bats continued to stay hot for the Rangers with Nelson doubling to left for another pair of runs in the fifth and
Allisha Martinez following with an RBI double to center in the sixth. Regis capped their scoring with a single run in the seventh from Nelson for a 10-6 cushion between themselves and the Grizzlies.
With their backs against the wall, ASU brewed up a storm that the Rangers could just not weather. On seven hits, six of which singles, Adams State managed to harvest seven runs to claim an 11-10 victory.
Game Notes: In the circle, Armitage allowed 10 earned runs while striking out five. Nelson led all batters with five hits, including two triples and one double. She also added a team-high five RBIs. Brown picked up a trio of RBIs on her two hits and Martinez wrapped up the contest with three hits and one RBI.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis concludes their regular season next weekend as they take on cross-town rival Metropolitan State University of Denver on the Roadrunners' campus. First game of the series will start on Friday afternoon at 4pm.
