DENVER, Colo. – The No. 4 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (14-0, 8-0 RMAC) celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a huge 21-1 victory over the Adams State University Grizzlies (0-11, 0-7 RMAC).
How It Happened:Junior
Ali Vanek opened the scoring with a goal 20 seconds into the game. 40 seconds later, the Grizzlies' Savannah Penland tied the game up at one goal apiece. That would be all the offense that ASU would get for the remainder of the game.
The Rangers opened up what would turn out to be a 20-0 run after the goal from Penland. Senior
Grace Rosenthal got things started with her first of three goals on the day. From that point on, the RU offense took over to the tune of 17 first-half goals with the final goal of the first half coming from senior
Sarah Myres with 1:32 on the clock.
Regis took their foot off the gas in the second half as they were determined to get some work in on defense. The offense passed the ball around, players made cuts to the goal but there was little intent to pour it on – a classy move from the Rangers. Four different players scored goals in the second half for RU including redshirt-senior
Koneta Karns who netted her first-career goal after drawing a free-position attempt inside the critical scoring area. The defender buried her free-position shot that happened to come on Senior Day. Three freshmen recorded the final three goals to end the game with
Camille Watling,
Maya Quigley and
Sydney Landdeck each finding the back of the net.
Game Notes:Myres (5 G, 3 A, 1 GB, 3 CT, 2 DC) was the leading scorer for the home side as she recorded five goals and three assists on the day. Senior
Wendy Donier (2 G, 3 A, 4 GB, 2 CT, 2 DC) registered two goals and three assists for five points. Rosenthal (3 G) and freshman
Jordan Winchester (3 A) each tallied three points in the game. 15 different players managed to record at least one point in the match for the Rangers.
Freshman
Sarah Kate Dhom led all players with three caused turnovers and four ground balls in the game. Senior
Hope Correia (W, 1-0) got the start in net for RU and made the most of it as she improved to 8-0 all-time in between the pipes for Regis. Correia made three saves in the game, allowing only one goal for a .750 save percentage on the day.
Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 4 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team will look to finish out the regular season with a perfect record next weekend when they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to battle the Westminster College Griffins (3-8, 3-4 RMAC) on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. This will serve as the regular season finale before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament begins on Thursday, May 2 in St. Charles, Missouri.
