LAS VEGAS, N.M. –The Regis University baseball team (9-21, 4-13 RMAC) came up short in their comeback attempt, falling 10-13 to the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys (10-20, 3-14 RMAC) in extra innings on Friday afternoon.
How It Happened: After two innings of play, RU found themselves trailing 1-7. Their run scored in the top of the second inning was the result of three hits.
Regis then went on to score five unanswered runs. The top of the third inning began with back-to-back singles by senior
Connor Rochon and junior
Coby Zimmerman, respectively. They advanced to second and third on a wild pitch before senior
Logan Heflebower recorded an RBI-single through the left side. Zimmerman came around to score the second run of the inning when sophomore
Thomas Alexander grounded into a fielders' choice.
The Rangers added two more runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning. After the first two batters were retired in order, senior
Mickey Meinhofer reached base via a base-knock to center field. Two batter later, Rochon doubled down the right-field line to score Meinhofer and junior
Ryan Tierney, who reached base via a hit-by-pitch. The two runs pulled RU within two, 5-7.
The score remained 5-7 until freshman Miguel Marques drew a walk in the sixth inning. With two outs, Tierney doubled to right field, scoring Marquez with two outs. The run cut the Regis deficit to one, 6-7.
The Cowboys, however, ended the Rangers' rally with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, stretching their advantage to 6-8. Junior
Kobie Schmitt came out of the bullpen to get the last out of the eighth inning, saving the Rangers in a bases-loaded situation and any further damage on the score-line.
With just three outs to give, RU scored four runs to take a 10-8 lead in the ninth inning. Tierney singled to left field before Rochon sent a one-out, two-run homer to right field, tying the game at eight. Zimmerman then reached on an error and Helflebower laced another two-run homer to center field to take the lead, 10-8.
The Cowboys used two hits to tie the game at 10 in the bottom of the ninth and send the game into extra innings. New Mexico Highlands then put the game away with a three-run shot in the tenth inning.
