Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rangers Suffer 91st-Minute Heartbreaker to MSU Denver

Regis outshoots Roadrunners, 18-7, for the game in the loss

DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team went the distance in regulation with Metropolitan State University of Denver before falling just 26 seconds into the first overtime, 1-0, at Regis Match Pitch on Friday.

How It Happened: Upon surviving the first 90 minutes, MSU Denver sophomore forward Jaime Gutierrez drilled a shot from the right side into the upper middle of the net to simultaneously give the Roadrunners the lead and hand them the match at the 90:34 mark.

The Rangers had multiple opportunities to score in the second half, including a last-minute shot by freshman midfielder Kai Beckschulte. His attempt was on-target to the high right but was prevented from crossing the goal plane by senior goalkeeper Alessandro Gentile as part of his nine saves.

Regis showed early on it was the aggressor on offense, getting its first shot-on-goal midway through the fourth minute of the first half when sophomore forward Kristian Hooker directed a shot to the low center of the goalbox. It was the first of nine on-target shots that didn't reach the back of the net.

RU had three times as many shots in both the first and second half as the Roadrunners, outshooting MSU Denver in both frames by a 9-3 margin. For the game, the Rangers outdid the Roadrunners, 9-4, in shots-on-goal.

Game Notes: Freshman forward Pascal von Matthey (3 S, 3 SOG) had the game-high in shots and shots-on-goal. Hooker (2 S, 2 SOG) attempted both of his shots on-target. Senior midfielder Porter Milner (1 S, 1 SOG) and sophomore defender Sam Gardner (1 S, 1 SOG) played all of regulation. Junior goalkeeper Tim Dolan (3 SV) held a shutout through the end of regulation.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers fall to a 0-2-1 overall record and will return to Regis Match Pitch to host Fort Hays State (1-2) on Sunday for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
