Rangers' six-game winning streak snapped by No. 10 Golden Bears

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team (6-1) matched up with No. 10 ranked Concordia University - St. Paul (5-2) in the Gold Bracket of the 2019 Colorado Premier Challenge on Saturday morning. The Golden Bears topped the Rangers 3-1 to advance to the Colorado Premier Challenge Championship at 7 p.m. this evening. 
 
How It Happened:CSP stopped Regis' run of 10-straight set wins with a 25-23 win in set one. The Rangers held a 15-7 advantage in the set following a kill from senior Kelsey Green. However, the Golden Bears came on strong at the end of the set, tying the game at 22 points apiece. Redshirt-senior Kristen Hornung got a kill off an attack that tipped off a Concordia St. Paul defender. Three-straight points for the Golden Bears led to a 25-23 win for No. 10 ranked CSP. 
 
Set two was another close one with the score 17-16 in favor of CSP, the Golden Bears scored two points in a row, giving them a three-point advantage last in the set, 19-16. RU fought back and took a 20-19 lead, but six-straight points from the Golden Bears closed out a second-straight set win for the designated visitors. 
 
Regis did not go down without a fight as they came back to take the third set 25-22 behind their best hitting percentage of all three sets to that point (.364). The third set was the only set in which the Rangers outhit CSP. 
 
The fourth and final set tilted in favor of the Golden Bears 25-19 who advanced to the championship match of the Gold Bracket later tonight. They will play the winner of the Lewis University vs. Southwest Minnesota State University game for the Colorado Premier Championship. 
 
Game Notes: Seniors Izzy Gosar and Kelsey Green led the team with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Gosar finished the match with a .583 hitting percentage, tallying two blocks in the match as well. Senior Nikki Kennedy was the only other RU player to record 10+ kills as she registered 11 in the match. Kennedy and Hornung each posted three blocks in the match to lead the team. Freshman setter Mara LeGrand registered 46 assists in the match for an 11.5 assists per set average. As a team, Regis finished the match with a .194, which was their worst of the tournament through the three matches. 
 
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University volleyball team will move on to the third-place game of the Gold Bracket where they will matchup with the loser of the Lewis University vs. Southwest Minnesota State University match that begins at 11:30 a.m. at MSU Denver. The third-place match will take place at 4 p.m. at MSU Denver.
