DENVER – The Regis University women's soccer team kicked off Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play for the season with an impressive 3-0 win over Adams State at Regis Match Pitch on Friday.
Â
"You open RMAC play, and you always want to start positive and not chase others down," said coach
J.B. Belzer. "You want others chasing you. We're 1-0, as many teams will be today, in conference play."
Â
How It Happened:Â Freshman defender
Ella Palmer sent in a corner kick that found freshman forward
Audrey Teague, who kicked it into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute. It turned out to be the only point the Rangers needed, but they proceeded to tack on insurance and more.
Â
Following a foul drawn by junior forward
Natasha Wehner, which resulted in a penalty kick, senior midfielder
Emily Ramos took the shot. Ramos went opposite side in her attempt and beat redshirt junior goalkeeper Corri Zaiger to the bottom-left corner for the 2-0 lead late in the 66th minute of play.
Â
Senior midfielder
Tori Rinsem later found Ramos open in the 76th minute. Ramos then shot the ball through Zaiger's hands to give Regis a commanding 3-0 lead.
Â
The Rangers dominated offensively for the match, outdueling the Grizzlies in shots, 18-4, and shots-on-goal, 10-1.
Â
Game Notes:Â Ramos (2 G, 2 S, 2 SOG) scored both her goals in the second half. Teague (1 G, 5 S, 2 SOG) continued to impress in her first year with RU. Rinsem (1 A, 1 S, 1 SOG) and Palmer (1 A, 3 S, 2 SOG) had a share of the game-high in assists. Junior goalkeeper
Julia Coombs (1 SV) earned her second shutout in a row. Â
Â
Up Next for the Rangers:Â Regis moves to a 3-1-1 record overall and a 1-0-0 record in RMAC play. RU next hosts Fort Lewis (1-2-0) at Regis Match Pitch on Sunday at 1 p.m.Â
Â
Though Belzer was pleased with the positive start to league play, he wants his team to now focus on the Skyhawks.
Â
"We have to move forward now, focus, regenerate, and be prepared for a very game, very talented Fort Lewis [team] on Sunday," Belzer said.Â
