Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Regis Fights Hard for 4-1 Victory Over Fort Lewis

Rangers score three straight second-half goals after Skyhawks tie game for fourth win in a row

DENVER – The Regis University women's soccer team closed out its opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) home contests with a 4-1 triumph over Fort Lewis at Regis Match Pitch on Sunday for its fourth consecutive win.

"The goal at the end of the day was to be 2-0 … and we did accomplish that," said coach J.B. Belzer. "I thought we were very good in the first half, probably our best half of soccer [this season]. And we spoke to them at halftime about how Fort Lewis would respond and bring energy, and sure enough, they created the havoc and we made mistakes, and they punished us for it, and now you're 1-1.

"But, the resiliency and the attitude of our team to come out of that and not crater, but to go find our own winner, and then continue to apply the pressure and get the third and the fourth goal in the fashion that we did, that is telling me a lot more about my team, and I like what I see."

How It Happened: Locked in a 1-1 tie, a shot by freshman defender Allison Warta in front of the box deflected off of senior goalkeeper Britt Blomso. The ball was then rebounded within seconds by senior midfielder Emily Ramos, who scored for the tie-breaking and eventual game-winning goal, 2-1, in the 52nd minute.

Junior forward Natasha Wehner would then contribute back-to-back assists for the Rangers' insurance goals.

Wehner first connected with junior midfielder Sophia Brendle, who scored on a shot that banged off the crossbar and past the goal plane at the start of the 78th minute of play for the 3-1 score in favor of Regis.

After locating freshman forward Audrey Teague in the 82nd minute, Wehner passed the ball to her. Teague then beat Blomso, which gave Regis a comfortable 4-1 lead.

Senior forward Chevonne John broke the scoreless tie to begin the 37th minute. Following a shot from Warta, John headed the ball into the upper half of the net for RU's 1-0 advantage.

The Skyhawks evened up the score, 1-1, in the 47th minute when senior forward Val Maestas scored upon fielding a pass from sophomore midfielder Katie Smith.

Game Notes: Ramos (1 G, 5 S, 2 SOG) closed out the weekend with another strong performance. Teague (1 G, 4 S, 3 SOG) put up another impressive showing in her young career. Brendle (1 G, 2 S, 2 SOG) scored on the Rangers' first insurance goal. John (1 G, 2 S, 1 SOG) provided Regis with the first lead of the game on her scoring header. Wehner (2 A, 1 S, 1 SOG) had the game-high in assists, while Warta (1 A, 2 S) was credited with RU's other assist. Junior goalkeeper Julia Coombs (2 SV) allowed only one goal.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers will next go on the road to face the first of two Utah-based conference opponents in Dixie State (2-1-2, 0-0-1 RMAC) at Trailblazer Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Though the Rangers have won four straight, Belzer knows his team will have a real test in the upcoming weekend.

"We've got a really difficult road trip to Utah against two very good sides," Belzer said. "They ask different questions than today, and it will take us back to some of the play that we saw and the style that we saw in Texas. So we're going to have to be ready for huge battles, and we're going to have to execute and be mentally stronger than our opponents."
