ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Regis University women's soccer team began its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) road trip this season on Friday at Trailblazer Stadium, where the Rangers fell to Dixie State, 2-0, to end its four-match win streak.
"We knew Dixie [State] would ask difficult questions, and tonight, we didn't have the correct answers," said coach
J.B. Belzer. "We must move on quickly as a competent Westminster side awaits Sunday in Salt Lake City."
Â
How It Happened: Redshirt sophomore forward Whitley Johns had a dribble shot that junior goalkeeper
Julia Coombs could not stop for the Trailblazers' 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. Johns received the ball from junior midfielder Kelsey Cook on a blast 30 yards out from the left wing. It would prove to be the only goal DSU would need.
Senior midfielder
Tori Rinsem attempted to equalize the game in the 44th minute with the Rangers' last first-half shot attempt, but her shot was saved by junior goalkeeper Adelle Brown.
Â
Cook later added an insurance goal upon stealing the ball from a Regis defender and beating Coombs on a 10-yard straightaway for a 2-0 RU deficit in the 84th minute.
This occurred after a shot attempt by senior forward
Chevonne John, which was saved by Brown in the 74th minute and ultimately was the Rangers' last shot attempt of the game.
Â
Though Regis held a 5-3 shot advantage in the first half, RU was outshot, 14-7, for the game. The Rangers also were outdone in shots-on-goal, 7-5.
Â
Game Notes: Redshirt junior defender
Emily Goodson (2 S, 2 SOG) contributed a pair of on-target shot attempts. Rinsem (1 S, 1 SOG) and John (1 S, 1 SOG) each had a shot attempt that was on-target. Coombs (5 SV) had five saves, tied for the second-most saves she has had this season.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis, which drops to a 4-2-1 record overall and a 2-1-0 record in RMAC play, will conclude its road trip at Westminster (Utah) (4-0-2, 1-0-1 RMAC) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Though the final result was disappointing, Belzer's team will build from Friday's defeat going into the next match.
"We'll learn from tonight and approach Sunday with a mindset to win enough small battles to insure overall victory in this important
RMAC road match," Belzer said.
