SALT LAKE CITY – The Regis University women's soccer team concluded its road trip at Dumke Field on Sunday and came away with a 1-0 win against Westminster (Utah).
Â
"Today was a great response from Friday's disappointment, and the energy throughout the team was brilliant," said coach
J.B. Belzer. "[Audrey] Teague continues to find important moments to shine, and the team also benefited greatly from [sophomore defender]
Mya Pfenning's relentless, shut-down defending mentality and [Julia] Coombs coming big twice to help keep a clean sheet."
Â
How It Happened: Late in the 65th minute of the match, freshman forward
Audrey Teague fielded the ball and scored for a 1-0 lead after touches from both freshman midfielder
Madison Hand and junior forward
Carly Bych on the head and foot, respectively. Teague received Bych's touch on the run far outside the goal box and drilled the ball into the upper-left corner of the net for the Rangers' 1-0 lead to end the scoreless deadlock.
Â
The goal proved to be the eventual game-winner, Teague's third such goal this season to give her a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)-high in that category.
Â
Regis continued playing successful defense for the rest of regulation as the Griffins attempted three more shots but none of them were on-target. Westminster last threatened to score in the 88th minute when senior forward Emma Heyn's shot went out and over the top-left of the goal box.
Â
RU and WC opened the game with a scoreless first half, but Bych had back-to-back on-target shots for the Rangers with a shot to the bottom-center in the 14th minute and another attempt to the bottom-left in the 16th minute of play. Both shots were saved by graduate goalkeeper Hillary Weixler.
Â
Griffins junior midfielder Hannah Taie had Westminster's last two shots of the first half. She sent one to the bottom-left of the goal, but junior goalkeeper
Julia Coombs was there to save it in the 42nd minute. Taie's second of those attempts was over the top of the box during the 44th minute of play.
Â
Coombs earned her third shutout of the season, recording a pair of saves in the process.
Â
Despite being outshot for the game, 12-7, the Rangers had a 4-2 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Â
Game Notes: Teague (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) made her one shot attempt count for Regis, notching her third game-winning goal this season. Bych (1 A, 3 S, 2 SOG) had a share of the game-high in assists, shots and shots-on-goal. Hand (1 A, 1 S) was credited with the match's other assist. Freshman defender
Ella Palmer (1 S, 1 SOG) had one on-target shot. Coombs (2 SV) was credited with her third shutout of the year.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis improves to a 5-2-1 record overall and a 3-1-0 record in RMAC play. RU returns home to host Colorado Mesa (4-4-0, 1-3-0 RMAC) at Regis Match Pitch on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Â
After coming away with this valuable win, the Rangers will need to build from it.
Â
"Colorado Mesa, our next opponent, is a dangerous side with enough talent and craft to press us for a result," Belzer said. "Our goal is to train this week as well as we played today. When that occurs, we can compete with anyone in the South Central Region."
