No. 18 Rangers sweep Orediggers on the road to improve to 2-0 in RMAC play

GOLDEN, Colo. – The No. 18 ranked Regis University volleyball team (8-2, 2-0 RMAC) wrapped up their weekend early on Saturday evening, needing only three sets to beat the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (8-2, 1-1 RMAC) on the road.

How It Happened:The most exciting and competitive set proved to be the opening set of the match on Saturday evening. Regis accounted for five of the first six points scored, but after leading 12-7, Mines stormed right back and tied the game with five consecutive points. CSM took a 16-15 lead a few points later, but neither team was able to run away with the set. Trailing 24-25, sophomore Rachel Siurek hammered home a kill to tie the game at 25. Following the point, freshman Mara LeGrand put a shot away to give the Rangers set point. On the next play, junior Caitlyn Burroway put the set away with a kill of her own.

With a 1-0 lead, the momentum carried Regis through the second set. The team bolstered a remarkable .414 hitting percentage in the second set, committing only one error in 29 attempts. The Rangers took the second set 25-17 behind an offensive showcase, also earning four service aces and two blocks.

The final set of the evening was another solid performance all-around for RU who managed to hit .270 in the set, with four blocks on the defensive side of things, and another service ace. Redshirt-senior Kristen Hornung and senior Nikki Kennedy each recorded two blocks in the final set. Despite trailing by three, 3-6, in the early going of set three, Regis bounced back and eventually took an 11-10 lead to swing the momentum of the set. The Rangers never surrendered the lead from that point on. With a 24-22 lead, LeGrand found Burroway one more time and the junior outside hitter claimed the match with a shot to the left-side of the court, beating all of the Orediggers on defense.

Game Notes:Five players registered six or more kills in the match with Burroway leading the way with 11. She also tallied five digs and 22 service receptions without committing a receiving error on the night. Siurek and Kennedy each had nine kills apiece with Kennedy recording three blocks and three service aces. Hornung had eight kills and a match-high four blocks and .571 hitting percentage. LeGrand totaled 36 assists through three sets for a 12.0 assists per set average. For the second night in a row, freshman libero Haley Kennedy led the team with 19 digs, adding three assists, 10 service receptions and one service ace.

Up Next for the Rangers: No. 18 Regis University improves to 8-2 on the season after tonight's win.
