Game Recap: Volleyball |

Rangers improve to 3-0 following two wins on Friday

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Day two of the Seawolf Invitational featured two games for the Regis University volleyball team who battled the Biola University Eagles and the University of California, San Diego Tritons.  Regis found themselves on the winning end of both matches to improve to 3-0 to begin the season.

Game One | Regis 3, Biola University 1

How It Happened:Regis opened the day with a 3-1 win over Biola as they fed off the momentum of their win the previous night, taking the first set in very convincing fashion 25-13. The team hit a combined .308 in the set with only two attack errors.

The second set was a back-and-forth battle which ultimately resulted in a 25-23 set-win for the Eagles who held the Rangers to a putrid .028 hitting percentage. However, this seemed to motivate RU who came back with remarkable performances in sets three and four. Regis accounted for many different scoring runs in the third-set, taking down Biola 25-18 to take a 2-1 set advantage. The .375 hitting percentage was the best of the night for the Rangers, coming in set three while also holding the Eagles to a .133 hitting percentage.

The fourth and final game featured a closer result, but it was RU who pulled through with a 25-21 win as three Regis players reached double-digit kills for the match.

Game Notes:Kennedy was the star again as she collected 12 kills, five blocks and a .435 hitting percentage. She committed only two errors in 23 total attacks. Both redshirt-senior Kristen Hornung and junior Caitlyn Burroway each tallied 10 kills, with Hornung leading all of the middles with a .450 hitting percentage. Burroway dug out 11 shots in the match and redshirt-junior Maddie Labor had 15 to lead the team. Senior setter Silvia Basso had 37 assists in the match, adding three kills, 10 digs and two blocks.

Overall, the team finished with a hitting percentage of .254, with 15 total errors on 122 attack attempts. The defense at the net combined for 14 total blocks, but the service line saw the Rangers commit 12 errors with seven service aces.

Game Two | Regis 3, UC San Diego 2.

How it Happened:The second game of the evening and the third of the tournament featured a five-set thriller between the RU and UCSD.

After dropping the opening set 25-22 to the Tritons, Regis rebounded in the next two sets, winning sets three and four 25-21 respectively. The back-to-back set wins set up a critical fourth set with UC San Diego.

The fourth set was a slobber knocker with both teams fighting to win the set. In fact, neither team hit better than .128 with the Tritons owning the better percentage. The Rangers had four blocks, but UC San Diego found a way to hold off RU to win the set 27-25.
The fifth set was where the drama ensued. Fighting to be the first to 15 points each team put their best foot forward. Trailing 7-4, head coach Joel List called a timeout. Following the break, Regis rallied for three-straight points coming on three-consecutive kills by Kelsey Green, tying the game at seven points each.

After UCSD got their eighth point, the team switched sides of the court. The game was tied 11-11 when back-to-back kills from Kennedy put the Rangers ahead by two points with only two points needed to finish the game. UC San Diego matched the two-point run to even the score at 13 points. However, a service error from the Tritons put the ball in the hands of Burroway for the final point of the night. Burroway's serve was too hot for the opponents to handle and the service ace from the junior sealed the victory for RU who improved to 3-0 to begin the season.

Game Notes: Kennedy matched a career-high in the game with 18 kills, while also stuffing seven shots at the net. She finished the match with a .400 hitting percentage to lead the squad. Green (15), senior Izzy Gosar (12) and Burroway (10) all tallied double-digit kills. Burroway led the defensive charge with 21 digs with Labor (17) and Basso (12) reaching double-figures as well. Basso finished the five-set match with 51 assists, three kills and three blocks. For the match, Regis hit .223 with only seven blocks. Each team recorded four service aces and 11 service errors in the match.
